Should our Robot for 2020 be high or low

My team is trying to decide the pros and cons of a low bot and a higher bot. Having a low bot would let us get under the control panel but easily defended and a high bot would allow us to shoot and hang easier. Any suggestions on a high or low robot for this year’s game???

I wouldn’t assume this right away. If you have a strong drivetrain, you should be able to push past most defenders to your target zone, which is protected per the rules (if an opponent interferes with you there, that’s a 15-point tech foul, which is the equivalent of 5 inner port cycles).

How much experience do you guys have with shooters and hangers? I would try and make some prototypes in the coming week to see if you can come up with a solution you can easily execute given the time between now and your first event. Looking at Ri3D should give you inspiration as well.

From a pure points perspective, the high goal gives you 2 times the points that the low goal does, but you may be able to get faster cycle times in with a low robot. Driver practice is everything.

On the topic of RPs, climbing will be quite important especially in early weeks, considering that the Stage 3 ranking point requires 49 cycles from your whole alliance and the position control to have been completed. Good defense can quickly ruin that. You can pull off a climber with both a low and a high robot design, since your climber will need to extend rather high no matter what due to the variable nature of the rung.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

I haven’t actually done the math on this, but consider how you’re going to hold 5 POWER CELLS (assuming that’s part of your strategy) with either configuration. If you’re shooting high, it may make sense to build somewhat high so you can do a linear hopper for the balls (see 971 and probably a bunch of other teams in 2012). Of course, this is just one potential way to do this, but it’s a consideration you may want to make.

We are thinking about exploring turrets this year with a short bot also did anyone find the dimensions for under the control panel area

The TRENCH is 2 feet and 4 inches tall to drive under and 4 feet and 4 inches across.

2’4", from Figure 3-21 TRENCH Dimensions

The center of the OUTER (and INNER) PORT is 98+" from the floor, and the maximum robot height (ignoring the endgame exception) is 45". The trench height is 28". Even at 45", you’re going to have to stand back a ways to get a shot at the INNER PORT, and if you’re contemplating a near-vertical OUTER PORT shot, that extra 18"* probably won’t make much difference.

* I would want to clear the top of the trench by at least one inch!

As for hanging, being short just means you’ll need a longer pole for your hook/whatever.
