Singapore FIRST

Some students from Singapore have come over stateside to attend SVR. They are affilliated with a FIRST-based program over there, which runs competitions similar to ours, based on the same ideas of inspiring youth and gracious professionalism.

What is the feasibility of extending FIRST’s reach to cover a 40+ team regional halfway across the world? Or would it be better to simply have a separate, and therefore more localized institution?

That’s great!! I could tell my friend there to join
Thanks for the info

Wow! Inspiring students across the globe. Although the game is very similar to “Stack Attack” of last year, but miniturized. Every team seems to get an EDUbot kit to use for the competition. Looks really cool, too bad there are no videos of the actual competition matches.

Four students from three of the schools that participated in FIRST Singapore shadowed a couple of our members today at school, and then they hung out during the hair dying. They were pretty cool, and the info (on FIRST S’pore) they brought looked really interesting.

As for video, I’m pretty sure we have footage from the competition (we had 2 current members, at least 1 alumnus, and a mentor there).

And for feasibility… I think that it could actually work pretty well, because when we talked to our S’pore visitors, it seemed like they enjoyed doing it, and they were really interested in our past robots and programming and assembly areas and all that. So yes, in my opinion, it’d work–keeping it localized is kind of I don’t know… [shrugs]

Wow that is really awesome. I didn’t even know there was such a thing. When did this program get started? Is this FIRSTRobotics Singapore thing sanctioned/funded/promoted by the same FIRST we are all familar with over here?

this makes me want to start a new off season comp wher everything is miniturized…

Yeah, I want miniturized tubs. I have one question? Do they carry all their miniturized competition stuff with them in their miniturized tub? That would be funny to me. We still use the tubs for about everything. We about put on the robot but it got overruled.

This looks great. I need to start a team in Prague for when I go to Czech Tech, hopefully.

That’s awesome…I want a edu robot competition.

It isn’t; it’s a local organization inspired by USFIRST. One of the things i was unsure of was whether combining the two programs would be feasible/advisable.

This is the first year of it. They are a little different (edubots because easier, size restraints, budget, and this is their first year), 8 weeks for build with competition immediately following (localized means travel is not as far/timeconsuming). It is an independant organization that is going to change it’s name because of trademark issues.

I learned all tthis today talking with Erica, one of the 192 students who went there, and talking with the director (i’m sorry i forgot her name).

If I remeber correctly this is the robot that the Chinese students use. I have an article on it in my SERVO magazine though I am in school right now. Errr wait a second. I guess we are talking about two differnt things.
