So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?

There’ve been some music threads, but all devoted to specific genres. I figured it was time for one massive album thread for the ages. (No, kids, the album is not dead.)

Among my recent listens:

Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple I’m not as big on it as I was about St. Elsewhere, but it’s still good. The Odd Couple doesn’t seem to have as much diversity of sound or as many tracks that stay in your head for days following. (Who can still sing “Crazy”? Anyone? Bueller?)

Lauryn Hill: MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 I’ve been a Lauryn Hill fan since I first listened to The Fugees. This two-disc album (recorded in 2001) shares little with her Fugees work (or even that heard on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill), but the stripped-down, honest performance carries even through the numerous lengthy interludes.

Emily Jane White: Dark Undercoat One of my later discoveries while still a DJ at WUSC-FM, it’s proof that just because something is common (female singer-songwriter) doesn’t mean it can’t be good. The album is a little darker than my usual listening, but not too dark that I can’t put it on during a roadtrip.

Common: Like Water for Chocolate Common has always been one of the best lyricists in hip-hop, something that the mainstream only started to notice with this album. Largely devoid of guest emcees, Common’s lyrics shine alongside some of the decade’s best production. Classic.

Alchemist: 1st Infantry Alchemist was another discovery of mine at WUSC, back when “Hold You Down” was in our rotation (and on vinyl to boot!) my freshman year. The album is gritty, both in production and lyrics (the latter of which trend toward the D-Block roster). It was the unofficial soundtrack to the summer of 2005 for me, tempered by the need to keep the volume down when I was working at camp. (1st Infantry is not for the kiddies.)

What have you listened to lately?

Minutes to Midnight- Linkin Park- almost hated the culmination of their recent songs and I love Linkin Park’s old songs
Viva la Vida- Coldplay- brilliant

I have an iPod. So I don’t listen to albums anymore. Just songs.

I’m with Ed.

Although I did listen to The Black And White Album by The Hives recently.

Just listened to Franz Ferdinand’s first album. I am listening to Vampire Weekend right now, they are amazing.

Just got done listening to Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”

I’m an mp3 player user as well, but the closest I’ve got to an album is:

Final Fantasy IX Soundtrack. That’s right.

(why don’t my image tags ever work?)

When It Falls - Zero 7 - I’m not exactly sure why, but I do enjoy their music. When It Falls is my favorite album, with Simple Things in a close second. Different music for different situations, though. Last year, I worked out what kind of music would be best to listen to while doing different things, and music by Zero 7 ended up as music for the very late night.

hmmm…it’s been a while since I listened to an album on purpose, but I just took winamp off shuffle and started “Wish you were here” by Pink Floyd…ok?

I have an iPod which I use for all my music, but I only listen to complete albums… listening to just a song here and there bugs me to no end…

Jurassic 5 - Feedback

The last album that I listened to was Disturbed - Indestructible last night. Since I have my iPod I dont listen to full albums generally except when they are relatively new or I dont have a playlist/feel like using shuffle.

Actually, I lied (a little).
I buy albums at the great great House of Guitars and rip music from them.
I am currently ripping from the Vans Warped Tour 2003 album.
After that I have Aural Playground (a techno compilation album. What I usually go to the HOG to grab). Logic Trance 2. ATP 3.0 and Days Like These - Inventure.

The Matches - A Band In Hope & E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals
Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop and Roll
Count Zero - Little Minds
Coldplay - Viva la Vida
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Avenue Q - Avenue Q

Josh Woodward- The Simple Life

He is an independent artists that I downloaded from Jamendo.com The place has some decent music, though alot that I’m not too fond of as well.

I’ve also been often listening to Rush’s Snakes and Arrows and Audioslave’s Revelations.

I’m on a Pink Floyd marathon. Started with the Division Bell now im on Echos Pulse or Dark Side Of The Moon is next.

…Forest

Viva La Vida by Coldplay. The song, not the album.

I have an iPod, but I still listen to albums. I guess I’m weird.

Republic? by sHeavy
The Dead Eye by The Haunted

Nah, not that weird. [sarcasm](At least for that. ;))[/sarcasm]

To that end, I just dusted off **“Ruff Draft” **by the late great J Dilla. I’ve yet to hear a particularly bad beat from him–always unique, always with that depth to the production that you can’t often find on the radio. (I also recommend Donuts, a full-length effort of his that has been sampled by some pretty big names after his death.)
