Sockets?

Does anyone know if there is a way I can use a sockets library on my robot. I would like to use this to communicate between the robot and a application I write on my computer. I know that it probably would not be legal to use during competition but I want to do some experimenting.

NetworkTables is perfectly legal in competition and pre-implemented in WPILib.
