Hi, We the spires FRC9106 are trying to use both solidworks desktop and and online (because we don’t have many CAD capable laptops, and solidworks rather than onshape because our mentors know solidworks). We think we signed up for both, but are very confused, because we can’t seem to get to the online version of solidworks and are not getting responses from emails to: [email protected]. Is there a way to get to a person to get support? -Thanks! -Mike
Just a note, have them do the Onshape fundamentals courses, if they are proficient at SolidWorks, it’ll take less than a week to get up to speed and pay substantial dividends in the future for your program.
Onshape is by and far the obvious choice for FRC at this point, rip the bandaid off. Their support is great and the featurescripts are incredibly powerful, tools like MKCAD and the such make it a great tool to get the students from 0-1.
Onshape4frc.com can get you started.
@Drew_B please just send my check to the 6328 Venmo, thanks
Hi, I don’t know much about the web version of SolidWorks, but If you want online functionality, I would recommend using Onshape. Coming from a previous SolidWorks team who is switching to Onshape and someone who is fairly experienced in both, they both have quite a bit of overlap and it is not too difficult for someone with solidworks experience to figure out onshape.
Additionally frcdesign.org is a great teaching/learning tool.
Guys, they’re asking for Solidworks help, not Onshape evangelism. While the responses of “just do Onshape” are correct, you didn’t need 3 of them, and it’s not what they’re asking for.
@mplanchard, this sounds like something you might be able to help with?
You’re talking about xDesign, right?
3DExperience modeling is mostly just Solidworks desktop with some cloud PDM baked in and an anti-consumer licensing scheme - it’s still installed on your computer and requires Windows.
xDesign (which is nestled inside 3DExperience iirc?) is the cloud-based modeling system that runs from a web browser, allowing for lower system requierments. It has an appreciably different user interface and would likely have a similar learning curve to [ducks] switching to OnShape. Felt like something between OnShape and Fusion360 when I tried it a year or so ago.
Anyway, I think @mplanchard is usually the one helping folks out here and does a great job so I will stop dissing Dassault Systèmes’s recent business decisions.
There are three offers to all FIRST team.
1 SOLIDWORKS that runs on your PC
2 SOLIDWORKS CLOUD apps. 100% browser based. Different interface but teams use to design a robot and more. I runs on a tablet or Mac. PC. Or chrome book. No install.
3 SOLIDWORKS + cloud services. Your solidworks models are stored and shared through cloud.
Let me know no if you need help. Marie
