Bob Hammond sent our team contact an email today asking which of the 4 “events” that we signed up for is our least favorite. In other words, which one are we willing to give up if asked.
I assume that the 18 or so teams that are signed up for 4 or more events also got the letter.
I’m by no means trying to start a fight over this but dont you think 6 competitions is a lot for just one team, and one question was your whole team going to attend everyday of each event?
Because i know in my school they barely like us missing days for our 3 competitions, but i cant even imagine 6…
The guy has a point: the people on the waiting list might not be registered for another regional. If you’re a little team, say, without over 6k in total funds, and you register for your regional only to find out that it’s full and so are the other ones close to you, how do you feel when you do your homework and find out that there are a half dozen teams that got seats in not only your only regional and three others? You feel angry and screwed over. Now, my team got ourselves a seat at our regional in Jersey, but I would be pretty POed if we hadn’t. Dude, think about the little guys too.

At least get those facts straight if your not “trying to start a fight”. Yes at one time we wanted to do this, but, due to the St. Louis change and the big waiting list for Great Lakes, we gave up 2 regionals weeks ago. You might say we were thinking, in part, about the other guys.
Yes we were going to use partial teams.
Currently we are signed up for 3 regionals and the championship. I’m sorry if you don’t agree with this but as of today there is no rule against it and who knows what FIRST will do with the next regional we give up. Will it go a rookie team or just the next one in line on the waiting list looking for that 3rd regional.
The intent of my initial post was to inform of a likely event, not to draw fire from those who would have us back of the fun for the sake of some abstract “Little Guy”
I think that if a team can afford to send it’s kids to multiple comps go for it. No one ever said life was going to be fair, and the new rules pretaining to the Championships are not fair, so why should anything else be fair? Before anyone throws Gracious Professionalism out, please remember that it doesn’t mean you have to be fair. Doing something to make things fair for another team is not neccesarily being fair to your team. Just my opinion, which doesn’t necessarily mean anything…
One thing that needs to be considered: with the current economic situation, some teams may not be able to attend all the regionals they signed up for. We may see some teams cancel some or all of their competitions come December when they can’t come up with entrance fees. It’s not the best solution, but it is inevitable.
Also, with travel restrictions being imposed by local school districts, other teams may not be able to travel to some far-away regionals. My team, for one, signed up for the Canadian Regional. Our school district has prohibited travel to Canada. If we can’t get some sort of waiver to allow us to attend, we’ll have to cancel that one.
I’m not saying this will free up all the necessary spots, but I guarantee that not every team currently signed up will attend every event they signed up for.
I personally think that anymore then 3-4 regionals are pushing it. Not only fund wise, students missing school days, and the teachers and engineers with that much added stress. Our team is going to three regionals, we’re taking all team captains and then whoever is next with the highest amount of points. OUr team goes by the point system…for every hour you work on the robot or related things that is one point, what grade your in, how many years on the team, ect… We can only afford to take everyone to the Ohio regional because it’s 45 minutes away and we won’t have to stay the night. So, I figure that three-4 regionals are okay, but if you are goin to the “championship event” and are still going to six regionals there is something wrong with that!!!
