There’s a post on the official forum:

http://jive.ilearning.com/thread.jsp?forum=3&thread=565&tstart=180&trange=15

it says:

The Exide EX18-12 batteries provided in the 2003 Kits are of a “deep cycle” internal construction especially manufactured this year for FIRST Robotics. Regular EX18-12 batteries obtained from a battery retailer will most likely be of a different internal build, and may not have the same reserve capacity as those provided by FIRST. You may use a purchased EX18-12 for practicing, etc., but should use the provided batteries during official FIRST competition matches.

P.S. The battery spec sheet shows a picture of the battery and it has the number “ES18-12” not “EX18-12” as in the above message and in the kit of parts documentation.

Yes we noticed that discrepancy from the spec sheet also.
I still must ask, though, is it even “possible” to purchase extra competition batteries???

and from where?

Can someone anwser the question of where to buy extra batteries? Our team has been searching non-stop and can’t find anything offical.

(sorry for repeating the questions, but just bring it to the top for an answers.)

Lauren,
I am afraid the answer must be no…at least for COMPETITION batteries…

we found the SAME battery that is in the spec sheet…but, alas, that is NOT the competition battery…

I believe we are ONLY allowed to use the batteries we were sent in the Kit of Parts for actual competition

sorry

this is the information I have been given…

good luck

For practice purposes, you can buy batteries from Coast Energy at 818 361-6461.

Also try Powerscan at 800 459-6859.

I suggest that you contact FIRST and ask them what to do if you have broken a battery. (Let us know what they say, for the benefit of anyone else in that situation.)
