Spark Max with NEO 550s encoder issues

Looking for some help with Spark maxes and NEO 550s. This our first time using them and we are struggling to get them to work. We followed the start up documentation, but we are frequently seeing the following issue:

when first brought up, either USB/Hardware client, or CAN and robot code (never at the same time) we get a orange/magenta flashing indicator, indicating an issue with the sensor. if we manually turn the motor a little bit. the fault clears. the motor then, sometimes runs with low velocity and stutteringly. On rare occasions it runs normally for a period of time 5-30 seconds. then stops, with the orange/magenta flashing again. If you manually turn the motor, it seems to clear fault. This is not specific to a control or motor. we have tried numerous combinations and all seem to have random behavior of sometimes working for a little bit and usually not. We MUST be doing something wrong.

  • We are running latest firmware 1.5.2
  • we have doublechecked wiring and connections. It does not seem to be that…
  • we have the smart current limit set to 40
  • tried with a ramp rate
  • Brake/coast mode does not seem to matter
