SPARK MAXs and CAN not working

#1

The spark maxes are invisible through Phoenix Tuner using CAN. We have also tried connecting PWM to no avail. This issue is present when using the NEOs. It will move when hooked up over USB but not over CAN.

The following is the error code produced by the driver station,

ERROR 1 Unable to retrieve SPARK MAX firmware version please verify the deviceID field matches the configured CAN ID of the controller, and that the controller is connected to the CAN Bus. com.revrobotics.CANSparkMaxLowLevel.(CANSparkMaxLowLevel.java:253)
Error at com.revrobotics.CANSparkMaxLowLevel.(CANSparkMaxLowLevel.java:253): Unable to retrieve SPARK MAX firmware version please verify the deviceID field matches the configured CAN ID of the controller, and that the controller is connected to the CAN Bus.

Any help is appreciated
Thanks.

Double-check the color of the light on your PDP. If it’s red one of the CAN wires may not be electrically working or you may have accidentally plugged CAN in backwards, test them one-by-one in a chain of RIO -> Spark Max -> PDP to narrow down the suspect.

The CAN light is green, also PCM works through CAN with the RoboRIO and PDP, or at least Phoenix tuner sees it.

#4

The next thing you’ll likely want to check is that there was firmware properly flashed into it, so you might want to use the REV Spark Max Utility to “update” it.

#5

We did that to we went through and individually reflashed the firmware on the sparks

#6

Spark Max’s are not gonna show up in the phoenix util no matter what, different vendors tools. The lack of control over CAN though is something your best bet is to get in contact with REV.

Ok thanks

We recently posted some examples that may help you get up and running:

However, since you were having issues getting PWM working, please send us an email at support@revrobotics.com with more details of what you have tried and how it doesn’t operate like you expect. Some clear pictures showing all of your electrical connections to the SPARK MAX would be very helpful too.
