Split Thread: Ethics of Large FIRST Choice Item Selections

So, uh, I don’t know if anyone else noticed that there was no quantity limit on the 17T sprockets…

Sorry!

Too hard to turn down a near lifetime supply for DT/prototype sprockets.

Wait, did you get every 17t sprocket?

I noticed but figured, ya know, no one would do that

That wasn’t very cash money of you.

Can you explain more what you mean by this?

Trade off is that they need to pay $ for Talons, PDP, VRM, etc.

Please be careful flagging something as “un-GP”.

Or just please don’t weaponize GP.

Just utilizing First Choice to maximize the benefit to our team. I obviously valued that part higher than your team did, and we followed the same publicly available rules and restrictions as everyone else. Doing my research isn’t “un-GP”.

The item max limits are not set by AndyMark. They are set by the KOP Engineers (staff at FIRST HQ).

I think that people’s issues is denying to other teams. I believe that there were 500ish available. Thus 83 teams could get enough for one bot (6 sprockets). However, if you take 96, then you deny 16 teams the parts. We had Talons and sprockets as 1 and 2 respectively on our list. Thus, if we did not get talons, then sprockets slide up to the top of our list. But, we have a lesser chance of getting sprockets as so many were taken.
I personally think that you did nothing wrong as you followed the rules. I think that FIRST should have limited this item or raised the price given the popularity.
Though why do you need 96? You can build 16 bots with that if you do not reuse them. You can reuse them and get a lot for prototypes.

2714 used 14 of these on one robot last year. With spares, a practice robot, and a 3rd drive-train worth we probably used/consumed 45 last year. Assuming that 6 sprockets is all you need for one team seems like a underestimate.

I applaud Scott for maximizing the value that FIRST Choice provided to his team and for using the priority list to its maximum effectiveness.

As a side note 2714 had a successful FC round 1 this year getting another year worth of sprockets.

On the other hand, we didn’t get a PDB, SRX, or VRM. It was pretty gracious of us to not deny other teams from getting those. It goes both ways.

Sprockets don’t go bad sitting on a shelf, and now we’re pretty much set until the end of time for #25 double sprockets. It was the best $/pt value on FC, and it’s an item we’ll eventually use. Nothing else was a pressing need for us, so we went with the best ROI we could get.

I don’t disagree that they should’ve been priced higher, but that certainly wasn’t an error, and HQ chose not to limit the order quantity for whatever reason. They obviously have the ability to do so, but knowingly chose not to.

Thanks to your savvy play, I suspect we’ll see QTY limits on all parts in the future!

There goes my plan to get 29 pressure switches next year…

Going back to my question, if these parts are commercially available to all teams, what is to be lost by one group snagging the FC ones?
