Letters to a Pre-Scientist is expanding their pen pal program and urgently needs more STEM professionals to volunteer as pen pals for the upcoming school year. “STEM professional” encompasses all aspects of science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine and a wide range of experience levels — even college students (18+) can participate — and is open to volunteers around the world.
The commitment is straightforward but could have a huge impact in the life of a student. After completing an online training in August, you’ll be matched (based on career field and interests indicated in your application) with a middle school ”pre-scientist” in a participating classroom at a low-income US school. You’ll exchange snail mail letters with that student four times throughout the school year.
This program is a great way to reach students at a formative age, to provide guidance and encouragement, and to promote diversity and representation in STEM by showing pen pals of diverse backgrounds opportunities they may not have realized were available to them.
By sharing your experiences, you may even inspire a student to join a FIRST team.
