Strategy for Climbing to 3rd Deck

How is your team thinking to climb to the third deck? (lift, or ramp, etc)

I’m thinking we might use suction cups or a silicone pad on a inverted L shaped climber to lift us up, as from what I read in the manual, you don’t need to be on the actual tier, your bumpers just have to be at or above the height, fully supported by the tier.

Actually, the bumpers have to be fully over the 3rd deck in order for it to count, according to G12

Is there anything about how many robots per level on the HAB? I can’t seem to locate anything :slightly_smiling_face:

To clarify what I mean, I’m thinking a climb like this would be allowed, considering that the bumpers are above the tier.

I’m wondering how impractical using large treads will be

2004 season had a couple platform climbing robots. That platform was about the same as level 1 -> level 2. You might look up videos from then for some ideas.

Oh Yea! I was confused on the definition of HAB zone but that should fit into the rules!!

This sounds like 118 in 2012 all over again. Be careful.

I wasn’t around for FRC in 2012 and googlefu doesn’t show me anything about 118’s climb. What happened?

How are you going to have your robot hanging off the side of level 3 but only supported by stuff at or above level 3? They said the platform is textured HDPE, so suction cups probably won’t work.

Honestly, I’m expecting a lot of “Tip the robot over onto level 3 and do a pushup” solutions. Or not even a pushup if your frame can rock far enough to get the bumpers above the platform.

My team seems really set on ramp but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s a (not very smart but I respect their opinion and love them anyway) ideau

118 had a system to… cradle an edge of the ramp that was sticking up. They were adamant that it wasn’t “grasping” or “attaching to” the edge, but the GDC disagreed.

Possibly a counterweight, and a combination of suction cups or if they don’t work that well, silicone pads.

Again, you need to be aware that you can’t “attach” to the arena. Suction cups are going to violate that.

Nevermind, missed the exception clause.

Reading the game manual, it seems like you can “attach” to the arena in the HAB zone.

G15* for reference.

I’d note that it’s possible to lift other robots up to the level you’re at and have it score. So for example if my robot could climb to level 2, then drop some sort of platform, I could lift up another robot and have that robot count as climbed to level 2. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to lift that robot up to level 3 and let it drive off.

My primary concern would be the restrictions on the frame perimeter.

The chassis profile for a robot with maximized area is a square of 30in per side, which is of course equal to the perimeter extension limit, so it’s probably worth it to have some sort of friendly lifting mechanism: they get 12 points from being on platform 3, you (the lifter) get 3 points from being on the base platform 1, and that’s 15 points total getting your alliance the RP.

E: this is probably going to be something similar to all the forklift designs seen last year.

To count as level 3, the robot has to have its bumpers fully above the level 3 platform AND be only supported by level 3 or by a robot at level 3. So you would need to lift them up to that height and have them drive fully off of your lifter onto the top platform – just holding them at that height won’t score the points.

Of course, they’ll have to drive off/lifting robot dumps them off if they’re sideways.
