My parents were not mentors. Their parents were not mentors. Ergo, I am not mentor built.
Depends on your definition of “built”
Did students design the electronics and motors? No, I think those were done by (at least) high school graduates.
Did students design the drive base? No, that was done by mentors of 3940 and 6956.
Did students write the code? Well, we assembled commands written by folks who are (at least) high school graduates.
So what did students do?
They assembled these mentor-designed and mentor-constructed components into what they hoped was a clever and efficient arrangement. And then other well-meaning adults gave the students shiny trophies for their work.

This means that event the mentor built robots are not really built by mentors from the team in question…

Are you saying 2791 is hobo-built?
Nobody builds our robots. We just walk into the shop one afternoon and it’s done.
Maybe your robots are building themselves and your team is on the leading edge of the Robot Apocalypse…
What about the transitive property? Mentors build students, and those students build robots… so did the mentors build the robots?
We’ve determined that the best way to dispel mentor-built arguments is to simply remove all the mentors from the team. We’re not at zero yet, but it’s only a matter of time.
Yes. Not only that but all costs associated with training students should be reported on the CAW.
That’s mentor built, we count those.
Elves. Elves build robots.
not to mention child rearing from age 0-16ish.
I walk up to my HAAS CNC and press the “Make Robot” button. Sometimes I let my students press the “Make Robot” button but only if they’ve been trained first. Safety is the #1 priority.
Students build robots.
Robots build teams.
Teams build mentors.
Mentors build students.
