Suspended but not postponed

There are currently 72 “postponed” FRC events, all scheduled for June 1st. But what about the suspended events? With a word like suspended, you’d think that the events would then be scheduled for a later date. But I haven’t heard a word about when these events will take place or really if they will take place. I assume FIRST will give us another update on the matter soon. But I just wanted to see what everyone else thought of this.

I would expect some more info in a few weeks now that FIRST can focus on that now.

There’s is probably another similar thread to this but as of now we should just wait for FIRST there is nothing we can do but speculate as of now.

Booking venues is hard and takes time. I would expect it to take at least a couple weeks before we start getting new dates.

I think it’ll take at least 11 days for us to get on the right side of this before plans can be even thought off. Schools in Ohio and Michigan are outright closed for 3 weeks. They won’t even be able to plan anything until mid April at the earliest I fear.

Assistant Regional Director for Western & Central Pennsylvania, West Virginia & Ohio email, relevant excerpt (see full email):

Suspension: does it mean canceled or postponed? The answer is neither- it is a pause while they try to figure out what is going to happen. The event listings part of the FIRST website will be updated soon- it will be updated to show events either as under review, canceled, or they will list an actual postponed date.

There is no point in speculating on any of this now. The virus outbreak is very much day-at-a-time.

Maybe all will be clear in June. Maybe we’ll still be on isolation. Who knows. But the sooner we all start to protect ourselves the quicker it will go and the fewer lives lost.

You can add all schools in Louisiana to the list of school closures. Closed from Monday through mid April.

more additions! Santa Clara County (San Jose + south SF Bay Area) is shut down

prediction: FIRST will turn this into a 2020-2021 season

I could see that

I predict that it will start backup in September, when schools are open. And finish up by Thanksgiving. New season starting in January.

I doubt it. I don’t think First will be able to find open venues or available volunteers at that time. Most venues are booked at least 1 year in advance and volunteers schedule their year around the event season.
Even if this virus thing blows over.

No one knows when the virus will be contained and stop spreading. Nothing can happen until that does.

We are in a District. So all our events are at high schools that have teams. I guess Regionals could be a lot more complicated.

Volunteers will definitely help , many are already certified ready to go next weekend if called. The venues may be a bit more work, however there have been many venue event cancellations so FIRST could grab them, maybe even at a discount , for a restart after May 27 with already one event scheduled seven weeks later that original (Take with big grain of salt, things could change)… The advantage FIRST has is its very flexible, some events flat out cancelled. Venues may come to FIRST looking to fill them

Week 14 1 Events

POSTPONED Festival de Robotique a Montreal Regional
Montréal, QC, Canada Offline May 27th to May 30th, 2020

This event is labeled Week 0 in First Event Web (Was a Week 7 event originally)

I have 45 students on our team and we only need 12 to 14 to compete. I would bet dollars to donughts that the others would step up to volunteer if it meant we could compete.

While we understand the challenges faced the uncertainty is very difficult. June we face exam season for our students and July many will leave and travel is more expensive. We also do not have summer access to the school for a few weeks while major maintenance is done.

Logistically we’d need at least 3 weeks notice to travel with the overhead paperwork and booking flights for a group of 30 even is an expensive proposition on short notice.

At least our robots are not stuck in a bag and teams can continue to explore idea’s that maybe was past on with hope to put the robot on an off season feild or by chance any new mini regionals that spin up over the summer.

Our robot, as well as some other teams’ robots, might as well be in bags- A lot of high schools have suspended extra circulars for the rest of the year.
