Tank Bots at Worlds?

Any bots that are running tank drive at worlds this year? If so, are there any that didn’t qualify off of awards?

I was in a thread a few days ago where we discussed tank becoming obsolete, and I was curious to see how many or how few tank bots are left at worlds.

One major team I love that uses tank drive is Spartan Robotics, who were regional finalists in Monterey Bay. I love the way they shoot in the speaker, it’s so smooth.

there are 100% teams that qualified with tank through playoffs, i would have to investigate some scouting data to tell you who tho.

A well optimized tank with effective subsystems will always outperform a barely functional swerve drive, especially in earlier weeks of competition

We are running tank. Granted we did qualify off the priority waitlist via RAS

I 10000% agree

That speaker shooter looks absolutely awesome…that is sick

Team 2689 I believe has tank drive (at least before worlds they did). They are ranked 24th in Texas, and have not won any awards so far. They did really great this year and I want to congratulate them on that.

There are loads of empty spots but i think this overview already gives a good indication of the dominance of swerve at worlds.

Team 9098 Firehawks ranked #1 on Technology field at Ontario DCMP with a tremendous long-bomb shot and will be in Newton division. Wishing them good luck in the crucible!

Yeah unfortunately this year defense just kills tank bots.

While they didn’t qualify for worlds, HOTBOTZ (2640) impressed me during DCMP qualifiers despite their tank drivetrain. Their aim was smooth and their shooter could shoot from all over. Sadly, DCMP was packed enough with swerve bots that they didn’t get through alliance selection, but they still played skillfully, had a great robot, and managed to get through plenty of defense.

So does anyone have a count? How many tank drive robots will be competing at Worlds this year?

I tried to look at some of their footage but there isn’t anything uploaded from their most recent events. You say they got through plenty of defense but honestly that makes me question the defense that was being played against them. I think from what I’ve seen 971 is easily a top tank bot this year if not the best. I have seen swerve robots unable/struggle to get through source defense (look at how great 5112 is at defense), and 971 a robot in contention for being the tank bot this year just completely cannot score. The robot is beautiful and on an open field is amazing. But with the layout this year of the field they couldn’t get to the source. If you look at finals 1 of Monterey Bay, 971 at 1:05 in the yt vid (https://youtu.be/CWeXgF_6zdI?t=65), they cannot get through fairly simple defense and have to stop scoring entirely. In the next match they put up 61, which I think on an open field 971 could do alone. I just think this is not a tank year as not even a complex sorting mechanism with a turret, elevator,…971 is amazing I think people know this, can perform if its on tank against basic strategy. (Swerve defense also really increases effectiveness). And even last year 971 with an amazing robot did struggle with defense played against them. Tank is just unfortunately not ideal at all for mobility and I don’t think has been viable under defense since 2022 with a nearly completely open field.

334 G-House Pirates will be going to worlds (iirc), they were a backup team for the 1st alliance at the Hudson Valley Regional, and during the NY regional they ranked 11 after quals and were alliance 7 captain.

Our team, 6593 HyperDrive Robotics would have also been a team with a tank drive (we used west-coast, so technically a variation of tank) however, we unfortunately lack the funding and resources to go to worlds.

9098 is a great example of what a very smart and well driven tank drive is capable of in this game.

I counted 4 tanks on Newton this year. At least 1 was there as rookie all star. 2 definitely weren’t. Didn’t have a chance to walk the other pits but super curious the total number of tank that represented at worlds. It’s a small community but I feel that tank teams for the most part look out for each other.
