Team 233 presents The FIRST Robot Rock Opera: The Audition

Here is a clip from Team 233’s “FIRST” Robot Rock Opera. This is the first of five that will include original music and lyrics celebrating robots and technology. I hope you all enjoy!

The Audition

WOW!! That’s so good. How did you ever come up with the idea for that, and it looks like you’ve got quite a audience. Did you use this as a fund raiser? I’m looking to see the other episodes.

Well thank you. The idea actually came while we were thinking of new and innovative ways to spead the word of FIRST to new audiences. We found out that the wort robot comes from the Chechoslovakian (?) word for slave: roboto (or something to that extent. someone please correct me if i’m mistaken). The word was first used in Karl Chapek’s play Rossum’s Universal Robots, or RUR for short. We decided to make an adaption of that play, abridging it and tweaking the ending. I dont want to give away what happens, so you’ll all have to watch and see!

As for the audience, we had a great turn-out. And no, this was not originally intended to be a fund-raiser. Its purpose was to do something fun and creative to get people from all walks of life interested in robotics.

ps- i’m in some of the later episodes… so watch out for me!

Haha thats brilliant! I have to be honest when I first saw the idea I thought it was going to be a bit silly but that was quite entertaining! When are you guys planning on doing your showings? I may have to make the trip out to Coco to see it!

That was honestly one of the strangest, coolest, most creative things I’ve ever seen. I look forward to seeing more!

it would be cool if you could do the performance at a regional during lunch.

Did your robots eat a Munchkin and the Cowardly Lion prior to their audition?

Making the thing was a lot of fun - I’m just a team alumnus now, but even I managed to get a bit part (I’m the voice of the “operatic” robot auditioning)

That was so cool, and really creative great idea, and great singing I’m looking forward to seeing more!

I’ll be another to admit this was so much fun to do, I was the guitarist, so the other two musicians and I got to write up music for the opera and perform it on-stage. A Blast!

Hey everyone! The PINK web design team is pleased to announce that the ROBOT OPERA page is up at thepinkteam.org!

Check it out for more information, including pictures, videos, the script, and even a kit to put on your own rendition of the FIRST Rock Robot Opera.

The second video is currently available. So check it out!

This… is nuts. What a strange and wonderful idea. Do I smell a new IRI talent show act…Other than nose instruments? :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s crazy original! Great job, PINK!

This is great! Just goes to show that there’s a place for everyone’s creativity when it comes to FIRST…I look forward to seeing the rest of the opera. Congrats! (Maybe they’ll let you present it in Atlanta for the assembled multitudes!)

Robyn

Thanks! We were definitely thinking about ways to get different kinds of people involved with FIRST… last year we started with Art of the Bot, and we extended it this year with the Opera. I would love to be able to present it in Atlanta if we could… it would just be a little difficult to move the sets and the props (aka old robots) all the way up there. But I’m sure if we really needed to, we could make it work.
