Team 2337 introduces Muhammad Ali

Quick, agile, she floats like a butterfly. Tough, she hits you where it hurts the most, stings like a killer bee. Not pretty, but she is always ready for a fight. Announcing the EngiNERDs’ 2011 robot: Muhammad Ali, or just Ali for short.

We are aware of the whole Ali-being-a-guy’s-name thing and don’t care. We will allow the pronunciation of Ali as Alli, but this is frowned upon.

Specs:
4 wheel mecanum drive, 1 cim each, gearboxes integrated into the frame

Weight at bagging is 95 lbs. Only minibot deployment and a couple other small things (sensors and such)

Dual banebot 775 driven arm. Transmission drives a clevis pinned through the chain, which then pushes the arm upwards with power transferred through a thin aluminum plate.

Pneumatic-powered arm extension

Two independent banebot 395s run two set of rollers in our roller claw. This allows pickup, rotation, and spitting of tubes. Inspired by 67 and 148

Short pneumatic cylinder holds lower claw ‘prongs.’ This allows opening of this jaw to facilitate scoring of tubes. We found that spitting was not an optimal solution. This also accommodates over-large tubes, by opening up the jaw a bit for them.

Note: Robot was not fully wired and plumbed or even motored at time of picture-taking, but those tasks were completed prior to bagging.

Very nice looking robot, but I gotta say I’m a little disapointed you didn’t take my name suggestion. The robot just looks like a John Christiansen to me. Best of luck this year.

Nice reference

Also, thats a fine looking robot, I’ve got a feeling you’re going to be very competitive this year.

We’ll be seeing you guys around, Good Luck!

At FRC competitions there should be a contest for coming up with FIRST related sentences used to described a different matter. In before oink oink boom! is heard constantly.

There would be, but any attempt would be shamed by Dave Verbrugge’s (sp) “Approaching Storm” at GLR several years back (2007 or 2008).

Nice bot. Does the minibot have mecs as well?

Simply, no. The minibot is being withheld from this reveal…y’all will see it once competition season starts!

I believe it’s been referred to as “The Perfect Storm,” and it will definitely be something I’ll never forget.

The robot looks like it came a long way from its state the Saturday before ship when I saw it, good luck this year Nerds!

The Perfect Storm was, if nothing else, a testament to his great memory, and at most, proof that he is among the greatest of announcers, both dedicated and doing his homework…

Hahah, it’s funny because we totally would, too.

That’s what I get for using the search. I initially had perfect storm, then searched and found approaching storm.

<beekeeper>For the record, killer bees sting no harder than regular honeybees. They’re just more prone to sting in the first place.</beekeeper>
