BCR’s Mentored Lego League Teams Win Awards

Immediate Release

A couple hundred youngsters came together Saturday, November 22, at Manhattan Beach Middle School for the Los Angeles Regional State Qualifier FLL Tournament, the first time a tournament has been in the South Bay. Nineteen teams competed, making it the largest qualifying tournament in all of California. Elemental Media Group, teachers of local Lego Mindstorm workshops for elementary and junior high students, partnered with Beach Cities Robotics to put on the tournament. Aaron Braskin of Elemental Media Group exclaimed, “They said we couldn’t get a tournament together on such short notice. They said we were crazy to try to have a tournament of 20 competitors. Not only have we done it, we’ve done it well.”

Beach Cities Robotics (BCR) Team 294’s mentored Lego League teams both won awards. MegaBlock Destroyers #1490 from Manhattan Beach won the Most Reliable Robot and the Spirit awards. Tulitians from Mars #1190 from Tulita Elementary School in Redondo won Most Innovative Design. Both these teams were awarded the opportunity to compete in the December 6 LEGOLAND State Tournament. BCR will be attending the LEGOLAND competition as guests rooting for their Lego League teams.

BCR worked the local tournament as judges, referees, and support staff. Alumni and now mentor Kevin Nelson was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award for his incredible work as schedule master for the teams and the judges during the competition.

Major sponsors for Beach Cities Robotics include Northrop Grumman Space Technology, Raytheon and Rent.com.
