Team 3205 Pinion Help

Would anyone in Massachusetts or New England be willing to give or sell team 3205 a RS-550 pinion for a BaneBots CIM-U-LATOR gearbox? We recently tested our shooter and discovered that it smokes motors if only one is used. We are hoping to use two motors, but we only have one pinion, and BaneBot’s lead time is too long for us to wait for them to ship it to us because we need time to calibrate the shooter. PM me if you can give us one.

Thanks
Team 3205

Does the motor run after there has been smoke, I know some of these motors have “baby smoke”. Ether, please chime in and let us all know if this is not the case, as I am unsure on this.

The BB lead-time is also very short for pinions and stuff, it is just high for p60s and that’s about it.

It didn’t smoke very much, but for a long period afterwards it still smelled like fried electronics. Sadly, we already destroyed the motor trying to get the pinion off, but thanks for the tip. Is there any way that we can test the future motors to see if they are still usable or not if they give of a little bit of smoke?

I would just keep going, as long as the smoke stops after a bit, all motors still retain the smell, but if the motor runs without any reduction in speed, keep using it, was it constantly spewing smoke?

I wouldn’t say exactly that it was “spewing” smoke, but it wasn’t like just a little bit of smoke came out and then it stopped. There was a fairly constant stream of a fairly small amount of smoke that lasted for two or three seconds until we noticed and turned it off.

Well, if that ever happens again, keep it running, and see if it stops, chances are you didn’t smoke the motor! And if you need fast delivery banebots does send their smaller items VERY fast! Which is a surprise knowing their record!

You can also cut vents onto the mounting plate of the motor improve airflow from the front of the motor. You can do a quick search for people who have done the same on CD.

Have you tried a pinion puller like this one? (credit to TheFro, I didn’t know these types of pullers existed until recently)

I don’t think we have the exact pinion you need :frowning: any details on it? I can double-check.

James, the real credit goes to google, all I did was google ‘RC pinion puller’ and found those guys.

As far as getting pinions faster, do you know the specs of the gear inside of the CIMulator? IIRC, they’re 24DP, but I’m not 100% positive. If they are, you could order pinion stock from somewhere like SDP-SI or McMaster and make your own, or if you’re really lucky, McMaster might sell the correct pinion already.

Yes, they are 24dp, but banebots never mentions the pressure angle and we aren’t sure how to measure it.
