Here are images showing how we implemented gear reduction in a very compact space. This was the only way we could figure out how to get the reduction needed in the space provided. (This is a ground gear mechanism we added for Champs.) It is a very specific design problem, but it’s pretty cool and seemed worth sharing.
There is a tiny bearing in the side plate, and a bag motor sized shaft leading into the gear box.
Hello, I am the lead designer responsible for this mechanism. The motor is mounted in the middle because the gearbox mounting holes are on the side of the gearbox. The sheet metal part that holds the gear mounts directly where the gearbox would have needed to fit, and the bolts would have gotten in the way. The motor is mounted on its front face, so its mounting bolts don’t interfere.
