Team 614's Passive Middle to High Bar Climber

Team 614 was looking for a way to upgrade our robot’s climbing capability for our recent district competition. After watching team 4242’s climber in action (thanks @apm4242 !!!), we decided to prototype it out for ourselves. Geometry was pretty interesting, and it requires the robot to swing into the bar, but what we ended up with is a completely passive addition to our middle bar climber that takes about 5 seconds from stowed to scoring a high climb. Here’s some videos of it in action!

Love the passive design!

4907 might have the coolest climb of the year, but this is pretty dang cool too. I love how much is passive in this design and how it’s so fast that you can stay out and shoot until the last second.

Very very cool.

That was the plan! We really really didn’t want to redesign the climber (and honestly probably wouldn’t have been able to) to get a high climb this weekend. After seeing 4242’s climb we realized we could let the mid bar do the work for us.

Every year we kick ourselves after seeing your team’s robot. The “I don’t know why we didn’t think of that” comes up almost every time we watch 4242’s first competition. I’m glad that we were able to capture some of your incredible designs into our robot this year.

Also, thanks! District Championship should be a fun one. See you there!

Really like this design. Its fast and the passive design seems to be robust.

I love this climb and wish we thought of it during build season.

Thanks! It definitely withstood some stress tests. It held when only 1 hook was attached (QM 13 red) or even when an alliance partner lost control of their drive and pushed us against the truss (QM 18 red).

Our team has kept an eye on all of your build threads. 3847’s an inspiration to us every year, so all of 614 appreciates the kind words!
