Team Momentos/Souveniers?

Student on team #419, The Rambots, from Boston College High School and UMass Boston and Modern Assistance Programs, Inc…

I know everyone is accustomed to trading buttons with other teams and such, but isn’t it starting to get a bit old…isn’t F.I.R.S.T. all about being creative and innovative. Well maybe its too late for this year, but hopefully next year, teams will come up with new and interesting things to trade with teams. Last year, us Rambots came up with the idea of headbands which seemed to catch on with a couple teams this year but I know people can come up with better ideas. Like giant inflatable hats or giant foam fingers, lol I dunno just a thought…whats yours?

  1. Safety glasses that bear your team #, name, and logo (remember that guy was telling people to get safety glasses in the pits during the course of the UTC Regional?)

  2. Pass out free dew that has those little “ring” insulators bearing your team #, name, and logo.

We like to make our own buttons, not those run of the mill round metal buttons but our own from scratch.
They are made of wood, machine carved and hand decorated by the students. We only make a few and we dont give them out to every one. They are sort after by many teams who are serious collectors and we make them hunt us down and beg for them.
So if you want a special, limited edition button this year see team 237 but theres no guarantee you will get one.

Trust me, Nick is NOT exaggerating here. There is a reason for the short supply.

Our first year we took wood, cut it into an octagonal shape, and then I spent DAYS of my free time sanding each edge. At the same time, someone spent DAYS of their free time cutting out our logo (which was in a circular shape, you could fit about 30 of them to a page). Then the wood was stained, the paper was glued onto the wood, and the whole thing was laquered (I think). And a pin w/ back was glued to the pack of all that hard work.

Last year, we found a catalog that sold pre-cut little pieces of wood, and we chose a sunburst. But we STILL had to cut out a bajillion little circles, paint the wood yellow, and glue the paper to the wood as well as gluing the pin to the back.

This year…we’re making things a little bit easier on us (THANK GOODNESS!), but it will still be quality work…and an interesting shape for a pin.

Lora…I will save one for you, and for everyone else…I’ll have a stash at the media tent, come visit me & I’ll try to get you one!

Last year in addition to buttons we gave out sparkly bobcat pens, those were fun  In the past we’ve also had temporary tattoos adn balloons. Last year we even had a limited number of glow in the dark pins that were pretty popoular.

Thanks to P.J. there are also always TONS of Bobcat stickers all over that place, hehe.

It’s always fun to see what everyone else comes up with though… countin down the days 'till nats!!!

You wouldn’t think so, but those foam fingers are pricey. They’re like 2 bucks a pop atleast. I know, cause I was with our logo guy when we were pricing out our extra handouts. that’d be a thousand dollar if you wanted to have enough to hand out at nationals. Most of the cool stuff is incredibly expensive. Or hard. Hard stuff if bad for throwing out from the stage and whatnot. I still remember the team that tried throwing out jawbreakers… ::shudders::
Anyways, Team 57 is giving out antenna balls, and hacky sacks this year. The antenna balls seemed to be popular last year, so we’re gonna keep with them. Plus, they’re not really that expensive. The hacky sacks are because we had to change something, so we decided to get rid of the light bulb stress balls.
On a completely different note, I think delivery is half of the novelty of a handout. Any buffoon can throw stuff off the stage, but it takes a Grade A moron to design a semi-automatic air powered antenna ball launcher. I couldn’t get enough time together this year to do it, but ya’ll better look out next year.

You couldn’t, but I did. It isn’t semi-auto, but it should work. So would that make me a Grade B moron?

I remember all the way back to our first year in FIRST (Torroid Terror - '97) and there was a team sponsored by Kodak. They gave out 24 exposure disposable Kodak cameras with their team name on them. I would say that was the coolest thing any team has ever given out. I still look at a lot of the pictures I took on that camera.
