Last weekend we managed to take the win at the orlando regional using a 4 rotor strategy. Together with our alliance captain 180 and our second partner 1744 we managed to pull it off in 5/7 play off matches. These also included a triple hang.
You can also find the matches from a spectator perspective here:
I have seen a lot of discussion on wether 4 rotors is a propper strategy and I’ve seen a lot of people who think it isn’t when facing defence. I hope these video’s might make you think otherwise. Although I think it still is hard to pull off it certainly is a viable way of winning matches.
If you have any questions regarding our robot or the matches, please fire away. I will try to answer them as soon as possible.
Truly amazing alliance you guys had! Congratulations on the well deserved win!
We definitely had plans to stop those rotors spinning had we made it to finals and I’m really wishing we could’ve seen if they would have been successful. It would’ve helped answer a lot of these questions about 4 rotors being viable under defense.
The strategy was so interesting at Orlando. Of the four semis alliances, 1, 5 and 6 all proved they could do 4-rotors. However, 1 was the only one doing it consistently. But, 1 was also the weakest fuel alliance of the four alliances. So it didn’t make sense to me that 5 and 6 were playing to get 4 rotors and only doing transition defense on 1. If they played more concentrated defense, I honestly think they had a decent chance of tying hangs and rotors, and unless 180 and 4481 have shooters I don’t know about, could have beaten 1 on fuel.
Unfortunately our alliance, who was banking on winning by fuel advantages and keeping others at 3-rotors, didn’t get consistent enough on our hangs to play you and settle the debate.
Later in the season is probably a different story though. According to our scouting 180 and 4481 were the only robots at the regional averaging above 4 gears a match on friday. By champs I think you’ll see several alliances with 3 robots like that. Then you the question is, do you give up on futile defense and hope you can match their rotors, or play 2 robot defense (assuming 1 robot can get to 3 rotors) hoping to slow them down enough? Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens!
Congratulations on this big win! Y’all definitely deserved it, especially after coming so close in South Florida (5 semi-final matches amiright). You guys have some of the nicest, and smartest students/mentors I have ever met in my 6 years of FRC.
I’m so glad we had the chance to play with, and against you guys in SFL and Orlando. Honestly one of the best robots I have ever seen.
I hope you guys come back to Florida in future years!
