This past weekend we were able to add a buddy bar to our robot at the Seven Rivers Regional.
This buddy bar was designed to be the same height as the actual climbing bar. This allowed teams to be able to easily hook on and climb us. Big shout out to Team 3100 Lightning Turtles for the awesome climbs!
Not every robot with a climber is compatible. They must have at least 15" of travel on their climber. We brought a climbing test stand and had it on our pit. This allowed other teams to hook on to us in the pits and test the climb.
We were very excited to see how well this worked and we can’t wait to have other teams climb us at Houston Champs!
Here’s a video of our best match at Seven Rivers Regional:
A question from a team thinking of adding a buddy bar - any issues with it being structurally sound? Do you think that 1/8" supports are thick enough (may be adding some angle aluminum to the underside to support them even more)?
Looks solid, and nice placement having it out over the carpet. I think we’d climb on it if we had a match together.
That depends on what your design looks like, can you post a picture of what you are planning? The buddy bar approach is kind of nice in that there are not a lot of large loads involved, so you can get away with some pretty lightweight structures. The design concept that 4522 posted is very sturdy.
i know - it didn’t happen if there’s no photos, but we also have a buddy bar climber potential, made with carbon fiber tube.
At CHS Champs, the configuration put us about 0.4 pounds over weight so we didn’t use it.
We probably won’t at Detroit either - since it hasn’t been used in a match yet, we figure other teams would be skeptical to use it…
