Teams that used Tableau

multiple questions before using it the first time:
did you have internet in your competition?
did you use Tableau Mobile?
how did you transfer the data from the head scout to the coach / strategy lead?
thanks!

Yes, but we didn’t use it

No. Since we didn’t want to use internet, we only ran our programs on offline laptops.

Student running walking quickly between stands and pit. Or drive coach would go to the stands to talk to the head scout.

so there were 2 offline laptops, one for coach and one for head scout and you switched the file with disk on keys?

In order to use Tableau Mobile you must have either Tableau Server or Tableau online. Neither of these products are included with the yearly donation that Tableau makes, and both are quite expensive if you don’t have some additional donation.

The only ‘free’ way to share a Tableau workbook that I know of it Tableau Public, but this requires all your data and visualizations to be public, and also requires an internet connection to mess with the workbook. Having internet connection at events is becoming less of a barrier than it used to be, so this may not be an issue anymore.

The Tableau donation only includes one license for Tableau Desktop, though you may be able to get more through their student program if you want to share a workbook itself. You can also store the data itself in an online database, that way multiple Tableau Desktop instances could pull it down from the same source.

When we used Tableau, we would export the workbook and all its pages to .pdf and drop it in a shared Google drive. This was not great since you lose all interactivity, but at least the data was easily shared.

We only had one laptop and it would be taken down to the pits when needed and brought back to the stands to catch up on the scouting data, our app is setup such that all data is stored in qr codes so we can just take photos with a phone and scan it in later.
