Tenses in the Impact Essay

We are currently writing and finalizing our impact essay for the 2024 season. We a stuck on whether we should use past or present tense in our essay. We have looked at past impact winner’s essays and have seen both used. What would you say is the best tense to use?

Whichever tense is most effective at telling your team’s story; it doesn’t matter too much as long as you stay consistent. Especially when you have an essay that is written and edited by multiple people, it’s easy to end up with different tenses in different sections, which provides a very disjointed experience for the reader.

I completely agree with that. The thing that is troubling us is that we are talking about stuff that has happened in the past three years and stuff that we are currently doing now.

In which case, you would use the tense that works the best for whatever you are discussing at the moment. If you had something three years ago, past tense. If you’re still doing it, past or present (there are ways to convey that you’re still doing it). If it’s something this year, present tense (particularly if it’s not a one-time thing).
