does anyone know if it is legal to hook up a tether after the end of the match to collapse a robot, i would be using a seperate control system(last years), to collapse our robot in order to remove it from the field without hassle if we should end the match in the uprite position. thank you

yes- as long as your robot is off the field, we had to do this a couple of times to reset our robot for the finals mathces and when we had matches right after each other.

so we would have to carry it off the field ,say just over the rail then hook up, even if its 10 feet tall at the time we shut down

yes, like the other posts say, you need to alter your robot so you wont have this problem ours is 4 ft wide and possibly 6 ft long at the end of the match

Rules say your robot must be able to get off the field without having to be powered up.
We required a tether after one match in order to get our hook to let go of the goal. Refs told us to fix it before the next match, or not play again. Our hook is powered by the seat track motor. Since then we take a cordless drill to open up the hook (on the flex shaft). Ref’s have no problem with that.
If your using the tether outside of the playing field, there should be no problem.

I was a field attendant at the Western Michigan Regional and have the answer for you.
There is no powering up of any robot after the match is over. This includes using your tether or other powering device to move your robot. Consult the main rules for the FIRST competition, they are very specific on this matter. There are no exceptions.
There is a target time of 2.5 min. after a match is over for clearing the field and the setup for the next match. Having robots not able to let go of things is a real problem.
You will need to alter your robot.
I was also a robot inspector and we checked for just such a problem.

Had we not been able to tether the robot up on the sidelines in UTC (basically… lifted off the field and onto cart as is… moved into waiting area…) we wouldn’t have been able to fit it through the door to get it back into the pit in about 50% of our matches (last move was dropping a ball… we’re extended 8ft in the air)…
So you can’t tether ON the field… but you can tether once you’re out of the way… (it’s safer… and well, some teams can’t get back to the pit otherwise)… am i correct?

You know how long we were when we were fully extended at UTC
We had to do the same.
