Thank you, FIRST, for naming the CUBE and CONE

In recent memory, I can’t remember game pieces named something as logical as they are this year: the cone is called a CONE and the cube is called a CUBE.

No cargo, no boulder, no regolith. No hatch panel, no fuel, no power cubes, no power cells.

On behalf of everyone trying to explain what the heck is going on in this game to a casual outside observer, thanks to GDC for making the game piece terminology straightforward this time around.

Now, if only I can remember that game pieces are scored on nodes, to form links, which are part of grids, which are located in the community.

It’s the cone and the spikey ball on our team.

Ironically, my team has referred to the pieces as “cargo” several times already. We almost never called the pieces “cargo” last year.

(This isn’t a joke, I’m being genuinely serious here:) I’m pretty sure FIRST does this for ball game objects because of Game Announcing and making sure they don’t accidentally say something inappropriate for a high school competition.

We’ve started calling the cube the “sphere with corners”

I keep accidentally calling it a ball.

I’ve personally been using air quotes every time i say “cube”.

I mean I’m still calling rolling on the charge station a “climb”. I guess it technically be a climb if you go from the side.

I applaud the naming of the game pieces, but I still think “community” is one of the dumbest names for anything I’ve seen. Idk what else to call it, I just know I’ll have to learn how to say it with a straight face.

My mentor calls the cubes “gummy bears”.

One game announcer in particular. Yes we love you Tom Nader.

tbh, calling it the “community zone” isn’t all that bad. It mimics a description of the area where alliance robots all work to score points.

We need a game that has “fruit” as game pieces that you have to pick up off the floor.

Lets hope it becomes a trend!

Problem is, “community” is also a big part of FIRST’s stated mission. Meaning finding the “COMMUNITY” game area in the rules pdf is a massive pain, since you get everything else too.

At least this year there will be minimal arguing about which made up alternate name we should all call stuff.

We’ve taken to calling the cubes marshmellows just because of how squishy they are.

RIP, I have been calling the cube a “ball” ever since kickoff where we used last year’s B bot to intake it and spit it out, maybe it is still a shooting game after all…
