Thank you, to the teams at 2023 Jackson/Spring Arbor competition

I had posted this in another thread but think it should have its own thread for the teams that are not on that thread to see. Some of this information was just relayed to me recently.

It was at Spring Arbor this past year. The pits were split to be on each end of the field to be in the same gym. I had a friend bring his son to the competition and found out after that he didn’t take him to the other pits because he didn’t know they were over there. Luckily his son had such a great experience even with just half the pits that he decided to join Nerd Sparks FTC team since they live out that way.

Edit: I don’t remember all the teams that were on our side of the pits but wanted to say thanks. My friend and his son were so surprised at how the kids, not just on our team but on others, would stop what they were doing and explain different parts of the robots and how they worked. I know he said a few teams besides ours had their technical binders out and would show him step by step how the robot was built through the binders.

Weren’t the higher numbered teams on the opposite side of the field? I’m trying to remember… I do remember that everyone was great there, especially having to drive in Saturday after that blizzard. It was definitely interesting as so many people weren’t physically able to make it in until MUCH later Saturday morning/early afternoon.

I’d concur.

We had a great time at Spring Arbor (even with the power going out at our hotel/restaurant). The people were great and even with the split pits, I thought the venue was exceptional. Disappointed it isn’t back this year.

Spring Arbor was so fun. From us basically taking over the loading dock as a second pit for helping other teams, to putting images of pickles on the venue’s lobby screens, to literally being 2 seconds from a horrible accident coming home that night. Definitely my favorite district event I’ve been to in my time in FRC.

From a very grainy picture I have of the pit map, it was 5084-6556 on the far side.

…of course, as soon as I posted, I found a better picture that isn’t upside down.

The 2023 layout definitely gave teams more room than 2022… fitting all 40 teams plus pit admin in the one half was pretty tight.

Spring Arbor was far from my favorite venues. Even Cass Tech the first year was better especially when the basketball coach threw a fit about not being able to use either gym.

Edit: we were on the side pictured above and felt like the teams over there were kinda an after thought. If following numbers there was a localish higher numbered team that was on the other side with most teams.

2009, with Andy Baker as head ref? Or the reincarnation in 2019?

2022 was the first I was aware they had a competition. No matter the basketball coach throwing a fit was hilarious

Yeah, I recall the Robot Inspection was stuck in the back corner. lol That was tight, and one of the giant Pit Admin speakers was RIGHT behind us. Again, overall everyone there was wonderful and helpful!
