Anyone with a manual, I encourage you to look at rules DQ11 and DA7. Directly from the manual, this rule says ‘…a robot may launch balls only toward its own alliance station…’ Also mentioned is a disqualification or disabling of the alliance. Does this mean that robots can only launch the balls when they’re facing you? In other words, if it’s on your side of the goal, you can’t launch balls into the goal… you’d have to cross to the other side! This seems illogical to me. Any ideas? I hope they clarify this in an update.

Thanks,

Tony

Hmm… i could have sworn at the kick-off they said you could launch over the station AND into your goal… obviously, just not at the other alliance’s station…

anyone ask for clarification?

I have to thank you for bringing this up, I hadn’t noticed it! I think we should contact FIRST on this, because it does seem illogical. I could see not firing balls into the audiance, or toward the judges, but tying to score in your goal from your side of the field would seem to be OK in my mind. Any comments?

>>What it means, but does not accurately state, is that your robot is allowed to launch balls over the polycarbonate shield into your own alliance station, but not into the opposing alliance’s station.

In previous competitions there were similar rules to prohibit teams from launching objects at an opponent’s team station. I’m almost positive that’s the intent of these rules, although they are not clearly worded. Under the old rules you could launch a ball away from your own station towards the goal and would be subject to DA/DQ only if the ball went well past the goal and landed in the vicinity of the opponent’s players.

On the other hand, given the geometry of the goal this year I’m not sure how effective a robot attempting to launch balls at the goal will be. The target is relatively small.

They won’t unless someone requests them to do so. Send E-mail to ear@usfirst.org.
