That's annoying.

I agree.

Also –
People who say robotics is just something someone does, and it doesn’t take effort.
People who say horseback riding isn’t a sport.
People who contradict my essays for class when they are correct.
People who say “I concur” all the time.
The law.
GEORGE W. BUSH <-- MAJOR
my list goes on forever about things that annoy me.

people that make fun of robotics without knowing anything about it.

people who say robotics isnt a sport (obviously they havent seen how much walking is involved going between pits and fields in atlanta)

People who think they aren’t smart enough to even try robotics.
People who are to arrogant and think robotics is a waste of their time.
[edit] People who completely avoid robotics team members because they think that they will become nerdy by association.
People who are told two or three times to do something and don’t.
Testing the robot for the fist time somewhere around midnight the night before ship.

People who think being nerdy is a bad thing (why is our society anti-intellectual, anyway?)
People who are told two or three times to not do something and do.

People that drive with brights on
People that don’t use blinkers
People that come up on stop signs fast
People that tailgate (always happens to me even though I drive 5+ of the speed limit)
Louisiana drivers (hopefully no one from Louisiana is offended)

“Windows is shutting down”
the grammarian in me hates this

Excuse me, but how is that grammatically incorrect?

I thought the same thing… But the grammarian in me says, “Let’s look more closely at this sentence.”

“Windows is shutting down”

First: There is no punctuation. On the computer screen, when this message appears, it is often followed by ellipses, which indicate continuing action. Possibly, there is no conflict with the rules of grammar.

Now, on to the sentence:

Subject --> Transitive verb --> Adjective

Where’s the Direct object? In other words, what is Windows shutting down?

Or, Subject --> Linking verb --> Adjective

How does “shutting down” describe Windows?

I’m actually inclined to say that Microsoft’s grammar is in fact incorrect. Note the other messages that appear around the message in question, or at similar times. No subject means that they are not complete sentences either.

This poem is pretty funny (it deals with the whole “Windows is shutting down” thing)

Or…
Windows are shutting down.

In this case, that would be grammatically incorrect. “Windows”, despite looking like a plural form, is singular. It is, in fact, short for “Windows operating system”, and “system” is the word that drives the singular/plural form.

If, however, you are closing all the windows in your house, and they all closed at the same time, and they all opened up and down, you could say, “Windows are shutting down” and be grammatically correct.

"Windows is shutting down. " would be grammatically correct, as long as there is a period. Really just the ellipsis is out of place.

Something else that annoys me.

Prescriptive grammar.

People who call them blinkers. Honestly, I think we might as well call them thingamajigs or dohickeys. Let’s use proper terminology. They are turn signals.

As many have put before: Please take no offense. Just a personal annoyance.

People who do drugs for no reason that they can say themselves, other than “why not.”
“Why not?” which of course is generally followed by a verbal eruption.

Does a motorcycle count as half a car?

people who say FIRST is a waste of money. direct quote, “your not inventing anything new so why waste so much money?”
even if we are not inventing new technology, with this type of attitude, why not just get rid of school too, we’re not discovering anything new so then why bother?

people who sign up for programming, but only know how to copy/paste from other people
