There are many good teams in FIRST, and not all can win the Chairman’s award. However, I would like to reward the teams that try for this prestigious award, and motivate teams that normally do not try for it to start this year. I am in the group of believers that* FIRST* is not about robots, and you do not need a good robot to be a good team. So if a robot does not make a good team, what does? This is what I challenge teams to accomplish this year before their first regional.
To compete for all awards at regionals (Chairmans, WFA, Website, Animation)
To make sure everyone is aware of all dates and deadlines and implement a system to make sure none are missed
To have every senior fill out at least one FIRST scholarship
To attend all local FRC events and to document photographically your team’s attendance
To localize all pictures so the entire team has access to them
To host a free event for other local teams
to participate in or volunteer in five or more community events
to attend multiple official FRC competitions
to volunteer at multiple FLL events
To begin a strong push to start a new FLL team by next season
Do deans homework
Recognize mentors
Recognize alumni
Have all core members on Chiefdelphi.com and have them posting
post 2006 and 2007 awards before award deadlines
post 2007 robot pictures before shipdate
Have an appearance in the media
Wear silly headgear to regionals
Make your grandmother proud
This is The Bonzack Challenge. I have created a powerpoint and am challenging my team tomorrow (11/9) to complete all of these things by the UCF regional. I, however, do not consider myself just a team 1390 mentor, but a FIRST and am opening the challenge to All teams, especially those in the Florida area. This challenge starts today, all of these must be accomplished between now (11/8/06) and March 9, 2007.
The Award:
If my team completes this challenge, I will allow them to shave my head during lunch on the Friday of the Florida Regional. (think we can get this webcasted?) If they do not complete it and another team in FL does, I will allow that team to be the ones to shave my head. ALL teams that complete this successfully may choose a team representative, and pie me in the face. This is the opportunity I know many have been waiting for for a long long time. If a team completes The Bonzack Challenge that is not attending the Florida Regional, they may pie me at the webhug in Atlanta.
I will post the powerpoint for more specific directions, and of course post here for further questions. I would like to see this thread used to post each teams updates thus far so we can monitor which teams are on track to shave my head and pie me in the face. Go teams! You have been challenged!
Few Questions Barry
DO you mean March 9th, 2007?
How can we attend multiple official FRC events before our first regional?
Will the power point be available here on Chief Delphi?
1: Yes, thanks for catching the typo
2: some of the things listed are general, consider that planning to attend multiple events not so much the actual being at multiple events before the first one. A team may compete at one event, and attend another without competing and that still counts.
Some other exceptions will be made to a few rule, for instance, although many teams have participated in many community service events over the summer and the beginning months of the school year, the 5 events for The Bonzack Challenge must be between now and then. I will exempt certain events such as Team 1902’s vex competition which happened earlier for hosting an event.
3: I just tried to upload the powerpoint, but it doesn’t seem to be showing up on the whitepaper to be downloaded. I may need to delete some pictures off of it to reduce the size. Brandon, can you tell me the problem here? Thanks
On the senior scholarship - All the seniors that are Eligible apply for scholarships, some of us aren’t always eligible (usually because we aren’t applying to those schools, or our school doesn’t offer a scholarship)
I have to say I love the last one
well i love the idea Barry and I hope some teams step up and try it. I know many teams are already started on things like that just have to finish the list which I don’t think is that hard.
And thank you Barry for pushing your team and other teams to make a difference in society. You are one the best young mentors in FIRST. There are soo many in FIRST. Thanks for always being a great friend and role model.
Good luck to all teams going for this challenge. Have fun shaving Barry’s head or throwing a pie when you finish. Sadly I won’t get to see it.
The ASME scholarship is a non=school specific one so is the Raytheon one. Make sure you apply to them!!! Sometimes they don’t give it all away cuz they don’t have enough qualified applicants.
I love the challenge. I think it’s a really great idea, and there isn’t anything really challenging on that list. It’s really just who has the determination to get it all done. Everyone is capable of doing it, and I hope everyone gives it a try!
So here’s a good question, what happens if there is a tie? does each team get half a head? or can it be shaved at the championship event too??
Barry,
I’m willing to film the event and get the video hosted on www.team1065.com, but unless you can get it done on the field, I don’t think you’ll be able to get it web casted. You might want to talk to event coordinators. I’m pretty sure you know the website for the Florida Regional just use the navigation and go to contacts.
Good Luck to all teams who attempt this challenge.
I have some questions for you. The Autodesk award is only avalable at national level, So do the teams that don’t go to nationals not qualify for the shaving of the head? And since the pieing of the face is at nationals do you have to do the Autodesk to be eligable?
I’m thinking Barry will look funnier with either green or orange hair instead of shaving it. That way if another team completes the challange during a later regional they can shave it all off…or someone at Championships can.
That means the Chairman’s should be posted today or tomorrow in the whitepapers. The WFA can be posted in one of the WFA threads, and the website in a thread as well.
Because of the issues with the regional Animation award, I am not holding teams accountable if this was able to be finished within three weeks or not. I know that was quite a crunch. To the teams that did it, I congratulate you and your animation teams, good work!
I also realize teams had trouble attending multiple FLL competitions. There were only two regionals and a state championship within the time period of a month. If teams were able to make it to one of these events, I’m satisfied.
To all that are working on completing this challenge, please post here to show what has been completed. Do as Wendy did to make a list of events accomplished, and/or links to show pictures.
