The "can crush" experiment.

So, while I was searching youtube for a video to convince my sisters that you could crush a can using nothing but changing air pressure, I found this. It’s the coke can experiment that everyone loves… but on a bigger scale

Crushing an oil drum with air pressure.

I love science…

We actually did this at my school a couple of weeks ago. Always impressive.

Anyone else jump when the “can” got crushed?

It scales up nicely too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz95_VvTxZM

Epic, just Epic

Scary! I am sure my team would be down to try this out. Now where are those safety glasses again?

While it’s not related to this video, one of the featured videos after the larger scale one looked pretty interesting:

I don’t know if that’s what is normally supposed to happen, but I still found it really cool.

That specific backhoe wasn’t designed to do that, but they are specially made backhoes which are intended to do just that.

First of all, the video posted by huberje is not of a backhoe, it is of an excavator. Second, both are designed to handle the situations shown, the backhoe just has modified outriggers to help it attach to rail cars.

Here is a promotional video showing some of what excavators are designed to handle.

Look up the Menzi Muck if you want to see a excavator built for extreme terrain.

I think it’s safe to add this to the thread:

DEAR GOD DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME::safety::

Can experiment, maybe. But be careful and use proper safety techniques.

PROTIP: Don’t touch the can with your bare hand

More science, just this time we are making things bigger.
