The fee of having a team number as a rookie team

What is the fee of having a team number as a rookie team? Can teams with temporary team numbers (9999) attend to regionals or off season?

Rookie fee is the same at other teams the and costs varies by location, check this website out for details Cost & Registration | FIRST Robotics Competition .

Pre-rookies/temp teams can not go to regionals but are commonly welcome at most off season events (some off season events are invite only).

I would also add that 9999 is strictly speaking not a temporary team number–it’s officially designated as a “Test Team” and used in events as such. Offseasons will temporarily assign it for pre-rookies/teams that don’t have a permanent number yet. (Actual temporary team numbers take the form of [year]000[order of registration], and disappear once payment is made in favor of the team’s permanent number.)

Which makes it wild the fact 900 and 9000 are part of the same org if it were down to chance alone. I suspect there was a bit of planning and communication to make this happen.

9000 was the first number to be assigned that year. Pay early enough and it’s yours.

That’s it. I inspected with @Marshall last year at CMP, and he shared that they had an internet 'bot (or maybe a bunch of them) hitting firstinspires as rapidly as they could manage to get 9000 for Zebracakes.

@marshall actually started 378 teams and then just gave 377 of them back when he found a number he liked

@marshall told me it was due to a western-style duel he had with Andy Baker. The loser had to run a new rookie team with the number of the winner’s choice. I wonder what Marshall’s choice for Andy would’ve been …

@marshall told me they got that number through the power of prayer. He wouldn’t say who or what they prayed to, though.

If I know @marshall he had to sacrifice another furby to his freezer to get that number.

@marshall told me that 900 received a free FRC team as a reward for surviving 20 years of FRC.

Team 900 was founded in 2002, and received notification of the Zebracakes award in 2022. He just had to keep it secret until registration.

It doesn’t hurt that @marshall and Dean Kamen are second cousins. I’m guessing that played a factor…

Sure. And Dean won that arm-wrestling contest so of course @marshall had to run two teams. Getting 9000 was just an act of grace.

I heard @marshall used ROS to gain backdoor access to registration via the FMS.

What a power move didn’t expect that from them.

We are on the verge of creating a Marshall thread similar to the Andy Baker one…

While most teams were building boring can grabbers to get their rookie numbers, 900 was harpooning their way to the front of the line.

It does help poking your way through a crowd if you have a long pointy horn sticking out of your forehead and distracting wavy stripes.
