The most recognizable teams that have closed shop

I am working on an illistutive example for some scouting stuff with made up data, but am feeling a little weird using high level teams that are still very much competing.

This had me thinking, what teams are the most recognizable that have closed up shop? Covid had to have knocked a few out unfortunately. Ultimately I am looking for recognizable that are no longer competitors, not necessarily “best win record” (although I am sure the latter can be queried).

330

1717

More regional, but 2451

Who else? Any international teams? Ideally I would get about a dozen for the example…

Edit: Oh snap, I did not realize. Need to watch it again, great movie.

7179 - Crossfire - Only around for 2 years but were on everyones radar during those two years (a very small group of teams can say their last official match was on Einstein)

1311 - Kell Robotics - Made it into the Hall of Fame in 2018, announced a gap year for 2024 to reorganize and refocus but did not sign up for this season so the gap is already larger than anticipated and may be permanent

One of those stats that is chilling and “what if”

One of the most storied teams in the Mid-Atlantic, TechFire - Team 225 (History) - The Blue Alliance

And from New England the oldheads will remember Checkmate - Team 40 (History) - The Blue Alliance left an indelible impression in my mind as a freshman in high school

A major team from texas but folded a few years before districts.

For California: Team 22, HOF 2001, and from whom Team 4’s lineage could also be traced. Folded the year before I competed as a freshman

1519 was a powerhouse in New England Robotics through the 2010s - Mechanical Mayhem - Team 1519 (History) - The Blue Alliance

Not sure if they’ve closed up shop or will be back someday but its been a few years since we’ve seen them.

While 5030 has shuttered, a rookie team has been started this year at SUNY Poly. 10352

23 certainly has an interesting history as an early-years HoF team. They’ve disbanded 3 times now, having competed 1995-1999, 2012-2013, and 2018-2020.

2753 - Overdrive was a group of homeschool students who were VEX champions (back when FTC was FVC) and went to Einstein their rookie season. Their lead student Tyler then went onto mentor team 2016 and took a trip to Einstein with 177 in 2011 for LogoMotion.

Matches: Team Overdrive - Team 2753 (2009) - The Blue Alliance

They live on still as an FTC team (or at least they did in 2020): https://www.instagram.com/overdrive_2753_?igsh=YnlmazZ3ajZnZ3Zj

Easily one of the most dominant rookies to make the transition from VEX/FTC/VRC, and potentially the first to make the switch?

Also, I have to add how much I loved 842 mentioned above already.

Older more iconic ones that come to my mind are 64 Gila Monsters and then similarly team 39 which iirc was the remnants of team 64.

Team 121 Rhode Warriors is definitely one of the most iconic NE teams - they live on as team 78 Air Strike due to a team split more than a decade ago. Before the split, they were one of the best teams coming out of NE.

Very iconic Mid Atlantic team was always 357 - Royal Assault - Team 357 (History) - The Blue Alliance

Not many people outside NY/NJ will remember these guys, but I was a huge fan of 375 - Robotic Plague - Team 375 (History) - The Blue Alliance

Quite possibly one of the most memorable and oldest international teams: 383. One of my personal favorites. Brazilian Machine - Team 383 (History) - The Blue Alliance

I believe 383 lives on in the form of many many international teams through their alumni.

Not really well known, but 174 closed shop a few years back. Only notable as the only 17X / UTC team to go defunct. Arctic Warriors - Team 174 (History) - The Blue Alliance

This one was a Covid kill. It broke the Phoenix union high school district and we couldn’t come back. I personally consider it to be a major bummer.

When 1251 showed up to an event, you were probably a fool to ignore them–doubly so in the mid-2000s. Double banners in 2019, they showed up to the Thursday of the 2020 Orlando Regional for the first of three planned regionals, they got sent home as everyone did (FIRST stopped everything globally that Thursday morning), and you never saw them again.

Others with a bit of history that ended that day: 945, 1065 (who did at least register for 2021 but didn’t submit anything), and 1382.

Even my wife enjoyed the movie last night and she hates being a robotics widow. Movie is free with ads from Amazon.

3301 and 4103 both had strong trend lines before they switched to VRC and FTC, respectively.
