This is outstanding. I just shared the whole video with my FRC team.

Thanks,

What are your “winning, but not winning” metrics of success in FIRST? Here is my personal list:

  • The smiles when the robot moves for the first time. (In FTC, it may be a child’s first introduction to programming and the first experience of “I did THIS.”
  • When a student who hasn’t previously considered a 4 year college or trade school, applies to a 4 year college or trade school
  • When a child with a disability that prevents competition in sports experiences a level playing field for the first time. (My child is mobility impaired and we have another severely disabled student on our team. Watching them drive the robot is a certain type of special for me.)
  • When a child with non-college educated parents considers college and gets a FIRST Scholarship.
  • When a highly competitive student uses more inclusive language and learns to look behind them for colleagues that might be falling behind or need help
  • When the Robotics Center is a safe place to be your authentic self, meet a supportive adult, do homework, get a snack and just hang out. (There are very few places that teens can “hang out” that don’t cost money or cause problems. We do require “membership” on a robotics team, but we strive to be that place in the community.
