The ridonculous state of supply and demand affairs

Ok seriously tho why is every single robotics vendor so trash at following through with their orders. Like how does REV come out with this nice fresh product and tell everyone “Yea so ik we said that they would be shipped around kick off but now we expect them to come around late january sorry lolz”. Andymark has the roborio2.0 out of stock and the roborio 1 is discontinued what are we supposed to do with that, Everywhere you go you see out of stock out of stock out of stock. Like tell my why SDS said our MK4I modules would arrive in EIGHT WEEKS. Literally the day of our first competition this is ridoculuous.

Idk man its just a bit upsetting

This is what the entire world is going through right now, and has been for a few years, not just with robotics vendors. The supply chain is all out whack, across the board. I don’t have any solutions unfortunately (otherwise I’d be a rich man) and it definitely sucks. :frowning:

They said Jan 9 to 13th, within a week of kickoff. The bracket will be delayed till late Jan, but that doesn’t really matter.

The entire world is struggling with the supply of chips and electronics. You were able to sign up for notifications for when the RoboRIO came into stock (although this may be hard for some teams). My point is that Andymark or NI can’t really do much here, its a global issue.

SDS has published their shipping dates for a while now, everyone wants them, so I think the onus falls on the customer to check the product page and see how early they need to order. Again, I understand this may be hard for some purchasing structures but still not much they can be doing (they’ve upgraded their shop, hired more workers, etc.) its just a lot of teams to process for something that has high demand.

I share your frustration and it really does suck. I think most vendors are doing the best that they can by being honest what you should expect.

I would avoid this by not ordering a drivetrain that takes an entire off-season to get the proper experience with right before build season

Also you have to think about that FRC vendors are working to meet insane supply chain demands, think about in the real world were supply chain is delaying products by months not weeks.

I should clarify that at the end of the day this is all just an empty frustration post. Realistically speaking if these items could be restocked faster they would already be back in stock. But same way that everyone is complaining about how big of a letdown this games year is im just frustrated with other things that are out of our control.

What product from REV are we talking about here?

This was mentioned above but everywhere is experiencing shortages on components (especially electronics). Things like RoboRios have been coming into stock in waves leading up to kickoff. If teams put in their email for an out of stock item, when it comes in stock they get notified.

Popular items like swerve modules have had longer lead times since they came to market. Unfortunately, this requires teams to forecast needs instead of buying what they want expecting to have it immediately. This is sort of just how it is right now. Keep an eye on the various vendors and be sure to fill out out of stock notifications where applicable.

Swerve modules

Where was this update posted/communicated? The last update I have seen on the Swerve Modules was from Greg on December 23rd.

The website also says that things should be available sometime today for purchasing:

There was an email sent to people who have placed preorders.

SMH, this would be amazing to at the very least post on the product page.

Our schools purchasing department (who placed our order) has been on holidays for over 2 weeks (so any emails they receive won’t be forwarded on until tomorrow at the very earliest), and I’ve been trying to communicate with REV customer support for several days now on the subject (they’ve answered my other, unrelated inquiries; But silence on the swerve modules).

To be clear, I’m a huge fan of REV, and have been praising them for the last several months. Nonetheless, this is extremely frustrating on my end (it’s hard enough dealing with the schools purchasing policies). I guess it’s suiting that I’m posting this in a thread for expressing frustration, while knowing full well the REV team is working their butts off to get things shipped to teams ASAP.

So, When does an Out of stock item cease to be considered COTS?

I don’t think there’s ever been an instance where a COTS part has been ruled not COTS because of stock issues. I wouldn’t expect them to suddenly start enforcing it, either.

I know that the whole not-COTS because of stock thing was answered but if an item suddenly stopped being considered COTS would you not be able to use it anymore?

Former COTS parts are still considered COTS.

Raw materials, labor, and transportation are all volatile. We’re seeing it as we source items for Kickoff Kits and FIRST Choice, and we wanted to give you a heads-up too. The item you want may not be available – or if it is available, it may not make it to you as quickly as you were used to pre-pandemic.

I have solutions such as start using canals and railways more heavily that will mostly solve mass transport , but goverment regulations make this hard such as the miranda act and such. And even then supliers don’t have the stock. I put this problem up to digital ordering as it is easy to order and find what is a good product for that matter so the good products
