The way-too-early Deep Space pre-offseason rules change wishlist

Make the first 15 seconds a normal auto mode AND low the blinds in the last 15 seconds for late game sandstorm.

Remove the rules restricting defense to one robot on the opposing side of the field.

If field modification is possible, move the loading stations to the other side of the field as well.

Or have the sandstorm appear for 15 seconds at a random point during the match.

You wouldn’t even need to modify the field, just have your human players stand on the other side of the field. All the game pieces are identical. Auto Sandstorm probably wouldn’t even need to change, you just use your opponent’s loading station.

I actually like that they are staying away from the rp bonuses in the eliminations, becasue it usually just ends up cancelling out anyways and I think the matches should just play out how they truly are meant to be and the scores don’t be affected by some dumb bonus points that could alter the game like the 100 point bonus for completing the rotors for example.

There’s no bag for offseason events. I think you’re confused by the aim of the thread.

:grinning: Guys, I think I might have found the best idea for an offseason rule change…

Let bots hold more than one game piece at a time

Or maybe two different game pieces. 1 cargo AND 1 hatch panel, but never more than 1 of each.

OK, so I should probably ask this question NOW rather than later, and maybe I shouldn’t ask it at all:

How hard does a Frisbee’d Hatch Cover hit?

Think about the implications of that, and whether we want the cargo nets to return.

I can see it now: “Yellow card for strategic decapitation of a referee.”

The only reason the 100 rotor bonus was “dumb” was because it was worth so much. If that game had been properly balanced, the bonuses would be fine. They add to the excitement and coordinate strategy around objectives.

What if both alliances, in the spirit of coopertition, each agreed to decapitate referees?

I feel like the 100pt 4 rotor bonus was necessary to motivate teams to get that “one last gear” instead of a climb. Next question is “was it balanced to make climbs worth 50 points” and the answer is probably not.

I should have added “in comparison to fuel”. My idea for balancing that game is somewhere around

Climb = 30 pts
4 Rotor bonus = 60 pts
Fuel = 2 for 1 pt in high, 5 for 1 pt in low
Plus a 40 pt bonus for 80 fuel

I’ve also thought about increasing the strength of fuel even more for small amounts of fuel, yet decreasing it for large amounts (like gears).

The point of the original post was that Steamworks hardly condemns point bonuses.

My team talked about this right after the kickoff broadcast. Curtains drop at a random point in the match for 15 seconds and Darude’s Sandstorm plays over the field speakers for the duration of it.

Maybe for mentor matches? Chezy Champs? Pretty please?

C01 red cards all around, given that the alternative is cops doing a manslaughter arrest all around…

I think the best reason for why you would want an RP-point conversion would be if it was almost impossible to get both in a match, leading to a choice for each alliance. If in Steamworks alliances had to choose between getting the Rotor or Fuel bonus, then you would have more strategy involved. Imagine if you had to place 20 gears for the bonus, or score 80KPa for that bonus? The only issue with that is the GDC would have to get the balance just right so neither bonus is impossible to achieve on their own, but impossible to get both. The points would also have to be balanced so both options are equally rewarding. That’s a really high task for the GDC, so it’s probably better to remove the bonuses altogether.

I don’t think it’s possible to make one of the RP’s attainable for mid level team while both are impossible even for 254, 1678, etc. Unless there’s a game mechanic that physically gates off a scoring objective (like a physical gate maybe?) then I see a game like that getting a ton of hate. I think the GDC needs to consider top tier teams, but not design the game around them. There are maybe a dozen teams that are in that upper echelon and over 3500 that aren’t.

Or remove bonus RP altogether so you aren’t playing a different game in quals and elims.
