The way-too-early Deep Space pre-offseason rules change wishlist

I think the RP bonus is the best thing to happen to ranking, and NEEDS to be done with FTC. As long as the RP bonuses are tied to normal scoring, they should be balanced. 2016 probably was the best at this. 2012 was the worst RP bonus because not only did it not scale to Elims, but it promoted double balances over triple balances.

How did it promote double balances over triple? There was never a case where you had to pick between one or the other.

Is that really the only criteria you need to consider RP bonuses balanced? What if an RP were given for scoring 90 balls in the low goal in 2017, do you think that would have been “balanced”?

What about having a bonus for completing the cargo ship, with no null panels. That way a team gets to decide whether they want to fill a rocket for 1RP or fill the cargo ship for bonus points to get a win and 2RP. This would also be something that doesn’t exclude all the lvl 1 bots.

The Fuel bonus was tied to KPa, not where the fuel was scored. So those RP bonuses were pretty balanced, just the other points weren’t that year.

Random would be okay but I think it would just cause a lot of teams to just stop for 15 seconds during a match. If it was a know entity teams could prepare for it and then we would get the tension of blind climbs and critical late blind scoring with a messy field.

In general, I think the RP should be relevant in some fashion to the elimination rounds. That the Autoquest last year was meaningless in playoffs hurt the lower performing bots. The 2017 point additions seemed to be in the ball park and made the game more exciting.
