I just came back from Around the World in 80 Days. It is a really funny movie and has jokes that only an scientist would appreciate. Especially the part about Wilbour Wright telling his brother the best way to pick up chicks is to invent stuff. I Robot is about to come out soon also. The other movie is Commander Klank and the World of Tommorrow (not sure of the exact name). This is the first movie to be entirely done using blue screen effects and is probably the only film that got it’s start with a couple of Mac’s in a garage.
I think there will be more coming this year and next, because at the moment it seems as though a lot more people are showing interest in science stuff because of recent development. For example, Day after Tomorrow is technically in this category, and had a lot of stigma around its release. What kind of movies would you like to see? We’ve had global warming, we’ve had travel, but what else can you do? I think they should incorporate extinction in there somehow…like what would happen if humans died out, or what would happen if dinosaurs didn’t die out, or what would happen if we killed off the rain forests…

Woops forgot about that one.

Saw a show on this exact topic on Animal Planet. Aparently all mammals would die out and giant squids would overtake us as the intelligent species. Im not kidding unfortunately.
I always thought the Australian Pigmie Muskrat would take over. Oh well.

I’m not sure who’s smarter, a giant squid, or Kevin Costner.

I’ll put my money on next year being the year of the sci-fi movie. We have Episode 3 (which even if it inhales audibly, the Star Wars fans will all go see it), Serenity (the ultimate in modern cult sci-fi), and numerous Marvel movies (for the fanboi type) coming out in 2005. And that’s just things hitting mainstream off the top of my head.

Not many of those comic book movies would be considered sci-fi. They are more action/adventure. Hey I just found out they are making a new Farenheit 451 movie.
