This is a stretch, but is this VEX servo module allowed in FRC?

Since it retails for $19.99, we’re OK!

Does it cost less than $75?

I believe the only rule limiting the type of unmodified COTS motors is R34:

R34. The only motors and actuators permitted on 2019 ROBOTS include the following (in any quantity):

PWM COTS servos with a retail cost < $75

Therefore, if you purchased this servo for less than $75, you should be fine.

This particular model is $19.99! Woot!

$19.99 We’re in the clear!

how funny would it be to make an frc bot using as many vex parts as you can

Oh my god…our first two years had more metal VEX bits and pieces than I care to recall. Not having access to much scrap metal and rushing to get poorly-designed sub-assemblies made, we kept dipping into our VEX stock. I get irritated just thinking about it.

Now I cram all my VEX stuff in a cabinet before Christmas break and keep it locked except in case of an emergency or thoughtful plan. We need a simple servo to move once per match, so I dug out the single VEX servo I have.

I have an intern this year and part of his job is making sure nobody’s trying to use VEX parts on the FRC bot.

VEX servo, maybe. VEX motor, no it’s not on the list.

I dunno. I know our team used 2 of those servos back in 2017, and I don’t believe the rules around them have changed since then.

I’m confused by your comment. What I have and what I’m asking about is a VEX servo, not a motor.

The link provided has the name “motors” (which is why motors were being referenced), but there is a servo listing at the bottom of the page. The motors from that page are not legal, but the servo is.

My team used one last year, its perfectly legal as far as I know

The Vex 2-wire motor 393 (276-2177) is not legal, as it’s not a servo. The Vex 3-wire servo (276-2162) is legal. The two parts look similar in many ways, but one has 2 wires coming out of it and plugs into the Vex Motor Controller 29 (276-2193) in order to operate off a PWM signal, while the other has 3 wires coming off it and can plug directly into the servo port on the RoboRio. Make sure you don’t get confused!

Saw one 2017.

I know the Vex 393 motor was definitely legal in 2013, but I do not think that is the case any longer.

Legal in 2012-2014, but not since. Given its similarities to the Vex servo, it would be easy for an inspector to miss!

It says Servo Module right there on it just as in the picture I posted, so I assume that it’s a legal Vex servo.

Everyone, Jon is trying to make a distinction because several VEX parts (past and present) look similar and seem to be in the same size case. Inspectors might be confused so have documentation handy. Not all servos are legal, only those that fit the definition in the rule, i.e. “PWM COTS servos with a retail cost < $75”.
