Thoughts on FTC Studica Products

For people in FTC. Do any of you have any experience with Studica Products that you could share with me? I am looking for its comparability to GoBuilda and if you would recommend it to rookie teams.

The U-Channel stock and drive base kits should be pretty comparable to Gobilda, and in fact probably even interchangable (the hole spacing appears to be basically identical, though the Studica pattern gives a few less mounting options). The electronics (servos, power block, linear actuator, etc) are also comparable to those offered from AndyMark and REV.

I would say the biggest weakness of the Studica ecosystem is a lack of variety, as it seems their offerings are a bit limited compared to other sources.

That said… D-Shaft? In 2024? Not. Even. Once. It is a cancer that must be purged. :joy:

I’d skip Studica and just go with GoBilda if you’re doing a normal FTC team. It’s an inferior system in variety and (I have heard) quality. I can’t say I’d recommend it to any team, let alone rookies.

Hi, I’m Kristie from Studica Robotics! We’ve received some great feedback from the FTC community, particularly about our structural components. Teams appreciate that our parts are not only durable but also designed with safety in mind—no sharp edges here! Our hole pattern has also been a hit, allowing for precise positioning at up to 16 different angles.

Our slide rails have also been well-received, with teams noting their smooth operation and low profile, which provides extra space. The pre-drilled and tapped holes that match our channels are another feature teams find useful. We’ve also heard positive things about our slim 100mm Mecanum wheels, T-slot extrusions, and other items. Exciting news: several of our parts are now FIRST Legal for this FTC season. Studica Robotics is a comprehensive building platform, you can get an overview of our offerings at www.studica.com/robots.

For our USA teams, we are proud to offer a grant program for robotics teams, along with structure samples and discounts for FIRST Teams. You can find information on all those programs at https://www.studica.com/ftc. We’re looking forward to the INTO THE DEEP season and will have products and team members at some of the kick-off events. If you’d like to see if we’ll be at your local kick-off, have any questions, or need assistance, our team is here to help— Please contact us using the details provided on our website.

Quick update! I’m excited to share the news that Studica Robotics structural components are now available in a variety of team colors! Feel free to take a look at https://www.studica.com/structure - If you are interested in our structure, FIRST teams in the USA can request a sample on that page as well.

Studica has been selling hard to our regional PDP for two seasons and donated quite a bit of merchandise to get the word out. We did a couple off-season FLL “level up” events for teams moving into FTC and we used a three donated Studica kits for the workshops. As a team that started back in the day with Pitsco and Modern Robotics, the Studica kit is a step up but still not on par with Gobilda. Cbale hit it on the head. D-shafts and set screw hubs are a huge weak point in the kits.

From a quality perspective, we didn’t have any complaints, but fit and finish on things like the motors is a little superior on Gobuilda. Both kits retail for around $800. Gobilda offers FTC teams a $200 discount. I don’t know how much teams would save with the Studica grant, but if the final price point for a rookie team was roughly the same, I’d point a team to Gobilda hands down.

KL8tner - Sorry but as long as your selling D-shaft and set screw hubs your going to get the cold shoulder and get unwanted comparisons to Pitsco who’s been frozen in time for something like six years while REV and Gobuilda continue to innovate.

Thank you for the honest feedback. I will share it with my team to see how we can use it to make improvements.
