Tipped or fallen Robots during Gameplay

I cannot find anything in the Game Manual regarding tipped or fallen Robots this year.

In the past, the rule was: “Fallen (i.e. tipped over) ROBOTS attempting to right themselves (either by themselves or with assistance from a partner ROBOT) have one 10 second grace period in which they may not be contacted by an opponent ROBOT.”

Not that Robots will be top heavy this year, but I am surprised that this rule has disappeared.

Let that be a warning!

build low CoM (or CG if you’re old fashioned)

I prefer Center of Gravity.
I am old, but not fashionable.

Indeed, it’s mostly just rolled into the G23 Blue Box now. Definitely fewer specifics this year. Practical reffing effect TBD? Psst, I’ll put 5 on “greater inconsistency”. Emphasis mine:

Examples of violations of this rule include, but are not limited to:
…using a wedge-like mechanism to tip opponent ROBOTS
…making BUMPER-to-BUMPER contact with an opponent ROBOT that is attempting to right itself after previously falling over and causing them to fall over again

Yes, but no specifics as to time allowed for a team to try to restore their Robot to an operable configuration.

In addition to the G23 blue box, read G24 and G25 carefully. It’s certainly possible to violate them if you make contact with a fallen opponent robot.

This year’s rulebook actually has a lot of changes to “the rules that almost never change”. Section 7.2.5 (ROBOT to ROBOT Interaction) is very different from prior years even though the names of the rules are similar. It’s hard to forget everything you know about past years and read the manual afresh. But per section 1.6 (This Document & Its Conventions), “Please avoid interpreting
the text based on … implementation of past rules.”

Agreed, exactly. I don’t know what caused it this year, but I’ve been putting down for “increased inconsistency” and recommending teams come prepared with rule numbers to drivers meetings and question boxes. It won’t just be teams who struggle with this. Hopefully it settles into a new norm going forward.

This will be my 18th year in FRC, and in that entire time I think I’ve seen 2 tipped-over robots right themselves. Having an entire rule covering that nearly-nonexistent situation always puzzled me.

Don’t get me started. One of the times that happened, the rule should have been called and wasn’t.
