Tipping culture in FRC

I’ve noticed recently that the vast majority of teams are forgetting to tip their field reset crew. Just a reminder that they only get paid 1 slice of Costco pizza for every 4 hours worked.

As a refresher…

  • Tip at the conclusion of your match
  • Tip based on how much of a mess your alliance made
  • You can tip in cash, useful robot parts, or cool merch! I have a stash of NIB 775pros that I like to hand out.
  • Also tip your FTA and/or FTAAs if you broke a field element
  • Do not tip for the head referee finally noticing you in the question box, that’s considered bribery.

I know that we need to push for volunteer culture change to rectify this, but in the meantime please keep tipping your field reset crew!

I’m pretty sure that G419 says that this will get you a tech foul and a yellow card.

Referees do not accept tips. FTAs and Scorekeepers, same.

And don’t even THINK about tipping your Robot Inspector.

Judges get swag bags. Referees do not, because referees are incorruptible.

Also, tipping in front of the referees is widely considered to be Bad Form, especially if one is tipping one’s opponent intentionally.

Tip your Volunteer Coordinators well, also–they have to wrangle all the volunteers for worse pay.

WPILib developers will happily accept a hearty thanks as a tip (although ice cream and pizza are also accepted).

I thought developers like Mountain Dew? Is this also acceptable tender?
