Tips for dealing with Houston weather

This is the weather where I live the Wednesday of champs.

Obviously very different than the mid-80s expected in Houston. How do you deal with that weather? Aside from shorts and a t-shirt, any other clothing items? I know water will be important. Does a hat make it better or worse? Especially coming from someone whose sensitive to heat and humidity, I want to make sure I’m more or less prepared for what to expect.

Bring a refillable water bottle since that is what TSA will allow on your flight, if you are flying, and the security at GRB will allow you to bring it. There are bottle refill stations next to all the washrooms. The security will not allow outside food and beverages into the GRB.

Make sure you have long sleeve shirt or hoodie for the time you spend in the convention center. Indoor spaces in Texas are usually uncomfortably cold.

Define uncomfortably cold. Like, for someone used to Texas weather or for someone used to North East weather? Because for us 50 degrees and sunny is shorts territory (ignore people who wear shorts in subfreezing temps.

Inside the convention center will likely feel like mid 60s to low 70s most of the time. Load in may be a bit warmer with the loading dock doors open most of the afternoon.

Honestly, bring a change of shorts/lighter clothing if you’re planning to be in longer pants indoors. Also, seconded on the point of it being cooler inside so bring a lighter/thicker layer depending on how cold you are prone to getting.

Meanwhile in San Diego it was in the 90s last week…

A few items I’ll add:

  • Sunglasses. In downtown there’s a lot of concrete, windows, etc. that will reflect sunlight. Protect your eyes.
  • A water bottle. Stay hydrated!
  • A hat. This will help keep the sun off your face and off the top of your head.
  • Comfortable shoes! You’ll be doing LOTS of walking at champs.
  • A collapsible umbrella. Houston is known for sudden torrential down pours. Also good to keep the sun off you.
On that last note: keep an eye on the weather and be careful driving in heavy rain. Our streets are designed to hold excess runoff during sudden downpours. The last thing you want is to flood the engine of your rental car.

Speaking about walking… how far a walk is it from the pits to the fields?

I tried calculating using the layout map from 2018 and got about 150m (500ft) if you’re in Carver, the farthest field from the pits. Could be wrong tho

Drink water.
Sunscreen even on overcast days
Good sunglasses
Also drink more water. Try for a gallon a day… You’ll fail but you won’t dehydrate.

Ohh also sweating is good use deodorant.

Drink water!

For me shorts weather is 32, sunny, no wind, (although I run in shorts and tshirt only if it is more than 5), but I had to go outside occasionally to soak in warmth during 2019 Worlds in Houston.

One of your FIRST meteorologists here (yes, we exist).

Here is the National Weather Service forecast for Houston this week.

Basically, the high is only forecast to be 85 and low is around 70 so super-nice by S. Texas standards. I don’t expect a replay of the first year in Minute Maid where the security line was hours long and people were passing out while waiting in line. It’s not hurricane season, either. Enjoy the weather!

Don’t forget humidity. It will really help people to look at the heat index instead of just the temperature.

This is true. It looks like the dew points will hoover around 70F later next week, which means 50% Relative Humidity in the mid afternoon and approaching 100% in the early morning. Expect a fine layer of dew all over everything in the morning.

And a small backpack or string bag to hold all the stuff you are not using. Don’t depend on storing it in your pit, especially if you are from a larger team.
