Tips for simple climbers?

Does anyone have any tips or designs for simple climbing mechanisms? Is there any teams previous designs or documentation I can look at for inspiration? We’re on a fairly tight budget and limited in the tools we have available, but we really want to build a climbing mechanism.

In 2010 we used a simple device with two pieces of pvc pipe, one inside the other, with a hook resting inside the inside most piece. A single pneumatic piston extended the pipe, lifting the hook over the level of the bar. When we retracted the hook stayed on the bar. We then had a simple winch with a ratchet that wound the robot up. (It 2010 we made a custom ratchet, but the easiest thing to use is probably to have a hex shaft for your winch with a ratcheting wrench.) Here is a video of that robot climber in action.

A pneumatic PVC cascade to go up, with a winch to pull a hook down?

You’ll note that that particular climb is explicitly illegal this year and will get you a RED CARD for an egregious violation of G18, but can be made legal this year by keeping the winch at your CG so that your robot doesn’t tip sideways as it climbs.

That’s really cool!

Is this an egregious violation?

It’s almost literally an example of what not to do in the manual:

Point B in the Blue Box pasted by ASmith immediately above: it is specifically called out as an egregious violation.
