Student on team #368, Kika Mana, from McKinley High School and Nasa Ames/Hawaiian Electric/Weinberg Foundation.

I have begun making a general scouting website for the Silicon Valley Regional. Right now the site contains a Quick Chart of robot abilities over all I’ve seen and heard of so far as well as a set of detailed info pages (yearbook style). So far, I have done pages for:
Team 255
Team 258
Team 330
Team 368 (us of course!)
Team 376
Please visit the site at:
http://mckinleyscout.tripod.com
For anyone attending the Silicon Valley Regional and would like to have a page made of your robot and posted online, please e-mail me the following information:

  1. Team Name and Number
  2. Major Sponsors
  3. Robot Name
  4. Robot Abilities (as well as specifics, ie: “pneumatics for claw” or “van door motor for arm”)
  5. A picture of your robot (team picture is also optional)
  6. Any other interesting info.

E-mail this to mckinleyscout@juno.com

Thanks to all,
Chris, #368

On the same topic, a few of us in GRT is interested in putting together a scouting database at the actual Silicon Valley regional competition itself. Mean while, Joe Ross from team 330 Beachbot is also working on a similar system at the SoCal regional at LA, so we will be helping them out as well.

So far, nothing is set yet, but if it works out fine, there will be a small LAN where teams can bring in their computer and hook it up. Then, the Database itself will be filled with actual information of the games, indicating what robot did what during which match. This way, the database will be reflecting the actual performance of each robot. Each team can download the data from the database and use them during competition before each match starts to help planning the game.

Hopefully, there will be GRT members constantly watching the games and record each match. But other teams can always help out by doing some of the scouting.

For other system such as the 2001 McKinley Scouting Page, we will probably ask for their permission to include their data into the database, so that they can be shared and accessed during competition. After all, the point of creating all these online scouting pages is to share the information. So, this will just be an attempt to gather everything for competition usage. If any of those pages do not feel comfortable to be part of this, it is understandable and respected.

We might be able to print out paper copy of robots information in case teams can’t bring computers to competition.

As of now, nothing is set. We will need to work out the details. So, Please wait for further posting related to this scouting database. Any suggestion is welcome.

I’m glad to hear other teams are working on scouting DB’s out west. I’ve had a request to send a copy of WASH w/ SOAP to be used in Cal, but it’s way too much work to get it running & I’m sure there will be problems that only the developers could fix (unless you want to fly Kenny & me out for a nice vacation  ). But I’m willing to help you guys out by giving advice or answering technical questions (I’m also volunteering Kenny without him knowing).

  • The first thing I’d say is get started on this today. You’ve got no idea how much work it takes to get something good up and running.
  • Decide what type of data & information you want on each robot. Will it be general robot data, or will it be a summary of how the robot performed in a specific round, or will it be both?
  • Decide how you will output it, only display on computer screen, or print it out, etc.

Well, I’m sure I’ve got more advice, but I can’t think right now.

Cleaning up LA with SOAP presents a few
challenges. Send a brief email to
wasssoap@soap108.com and we can talk.

Worst case - I suggest using a copy of Team 340’s
DB (its a standalone executable) You can get to
their site from soap108.com

Sorry, I should have clarified on the fact that I will NOT do any detailed pages without permission or specific information directly from teams. So, if you would like a page done, please e-mail mckinleyscout@juno.com.

Chris, #368

PS: I did e-mail a handful of teams attending the regional but I wasn’t able to obtain any contact information. If you know of rookie teams in your area (or also info for teams 22, 60, 100, 372, 409, 443) could you e-mail it to me please?
Thanks to all.
