Torque on a flywheel

We’re planning to use 2 NEO550s on a 1:1 for our flywheel. Something that popped up was the discussion of torque and potentially using a NEO or a Falcon 500 for the flywheel on a 1:1. The wheel of choice is a 4” 80A durometer wheel from Andymark and has 2” of compression.

How far do you plan on shooting?

You will be very unhappy with the 550s. They will not have the torque needed to spin your wheels up and recover after a shot of 30 feet in a reasonable time frame.

We’re using two Falcons 1:1 on 7", 6-lb flywheel (I = 0.072 kg-m^2), and our recovery time looks acceptable on ~20’ shots. If going for ~35’ shots we might go for a third motor.

Why would distance affect how many motors you need?

It wouldn’t, technically. Distance is dependent on speed, but having more motors would increase torque not speed. The amount of torque you have determines how long it take for the flywheel to recover the energy it used to propel the ball. If you don’t wait for the shooter to get back up to speed then the next ball won’t go as far. If you are only shooting a short distance you may not need very much torque to recover the lost energy but if you are shooting a long distance you will need it if you want to shoot at a decent rate.

TLDR: More motors means you can shoot all of your balls the same distance without waiting between shots.

Oh, and this is because at further distances you would need a higher rpm?

Yes, and more of the flywheels energy (spin) would be transferred into the ball.
