Tossing a bin at the ramp in HP

So this discussion has come up a few times in tigerbolt. We have talked about tossing a bin at the center stack of 29 during the human player period.

Technically, following FIRST rules, IF the bin landed upright, this would only incur two minor penalties. One for throwing a bin, one for placing a bin outside of your respective scoring zone. If you were to toss it and it didnt land upright, you would be disqualified.

If someone actually did that, they could change the whole balance of the match, granted not for their own good though.

So, I wanna know whos gonna toss one at the wall and see what happens :p. Do you guys think that it should be an automatic DQ even if it lands right side up?

Cory

[edit] wow that is a horrible poll… maybe I should sleep some

Only Cory would think of something like that…

But no, I think you need to be DQ’d for that. The Human Player is not supposed to mess with the wall. He is supposed to place his bins and get off. Said and done.

really silly question for you cory

If FIRST wanted you to throw bins at the wall to I guess help the opponents scoring abilities out, don’t you think they would have OK’d it in the rules ?

I mean yeah it could be a good thing to test whether or not you would be dq’d but don’t try it during the competition try it during a practice round where points isn’t an issue, and you won’t put yours or your partners rank at risk!

If it was allowed I say it should be a DQ’d b/c your basically throwing yourselves at the opponents mercy w/o even trying to compete. You’ve given up before you even did anything. Lose the match naturally, don’t lose it over a DQ or something stupid

Furthermore the only objects the human player may touch for during the 10 second intervale is his given 4 Stack and that is the only thing he is allowed to mess with concerning the scoring outcome of the match

Just my personal opinion!!!

doing so would be a DQ because of [rule=DQ1]DQ1[/rule]

If you throw a bin from your side of the field into the wall, it’s more likely that you’d be giving points to the other alliance. If your alliance does not gain points, that rule doesn’t apply.

The most common interpretation of that DQ is:
“An alliance may not benefit, or affect the score in any way by breaking a rule”

If your alliance wins, you gain points because of 2x the loser’s score, so you would be DQed.

If you lose, well, you lose.

However, what John said is what would really happen.

With practice, you’d be able to knock the wall so that the top rows of bins landed on your side. There’s not much point in taking the risk of giving points to the other side. Knocking down an opposing stack might be a possibility as well.

I think that DQ1 just about covers all the possibilities.

The only reason I can see for doing something like that, would be to either aid you’re teams auton. programming or mess up some one else’s.

I hope to see one of you guys at IRI try this. Maybe I will play around with the idea, and get some diagrams up here, on how it could be done.

Even if it never happens it is something funny to think about.

I have it on good authority, that anyone who does this at IRI will be DQ’d. Is it worth it? No.

Yeah that seems in violation of GM 1 and the spirit of the game.

Yeah, even if by some magical force the bin lands upright, the human player can’t break a rule in order to score points.

I figure maybe a team whose robot breaks down could try it. If you’re robot isn’t on the field, might as well have some fun with the game. I’m not in favor of doing anything like that personally, but I think it would be cool if someone did. Remember IRI is an off-season comp, its not the most serious thing in the world.
