I’m having trouble interpreting the graph, what does each side(x and y) mean?

The x is the total amount of ranking points earned between the 2 alliances in a match. The y is how frequently it happened, and the colors differentiate the years. For example, the blue bar on the right means that this year almost half of all Houston quals matches generated 4 ranking points for the winning alliance and 2 for the losing.

When maximum RP is the default and you depend on your partners to get the hangar RP, you can get really screwed by the schedule. Really don’t like that when FIRST designs RP like that (2012 was pretty annoying too).

Ranking points were a bit too easy this year. The ranking point worked well at regionals and district events, but at worlds it seemed to cause problems with really good robots not getting their expected rank. I think first should change the RP criteria (like ball count) between week 7 and worlds, maybe even every week of the season. This would better reflect the evolving competition now that there is no bag and tag.

Absolute polar opposites compared to 2020, where the 49 power cell RP was not earned a single time (and the endgame RP was only earned ~15% of the time).

I’m sure it had something to do with events only getting up to Week 3, but I digress.

It was a decent surprise that they didn’t write the ability to change it into the manual this year like they have for the relevant RP thresholds in the past. A lot of people noted that absence at kickoff, and it certainly does seem like it wound up too low without the ability to raise it. I suspect (hope) that they won’t miss that opportunity in future years.

What I think would’ve been best is something constantly dynamic like 15 balls + 2 per week. The ‘quintet’ would be 3 balls + 1 every 2 weeks for a 2 cargo ‘discount’ on how many you need for the RP. Hangar would also be 11 pts + 2 per week to get an RP. This would even out the curve a lot and bring it pretty close to 2019 levels, while also staying in this 3-4 average rp/match window for the entire season. Of course I am choosing these numbers after the season’s conclusion so there’s no guarantee that FIRST could’ve chosen these/similarly effective thresholds, but anything even close to what I came up with would be a lot better than what it actually was.

This does have the minor inconsistency that RP actually get harder over time between weeks 1 and 5, but as long as the difficulty of an RP is consistent at one competition (which it would be), that would barely be an issue.
